VIDEO: GGC – 27 – Van Repairs: Fixing our Brakes at a Truck Stop in Newfoundland


Part 23 of our road trip across Northern Quebec and Eastern Canada. After driving around for 3 days with nothing but bailing wire holding our brakes together, we finally found the proper parts, and fixed them at a Truck Stop.

  2. Not about your brakes but did notice you have the same awning as mine. Thought I would share some info with you to hopefully save you the problem I had. Almost everything on it is held together with rivets, the rivet that goes through the nylon slide block in the rails came apart causing everything to just go wrong breaking both of the blocks, which are not available anymore. Had a local CNC shop make some new ones for me. Went over it and found a number of the other rivets were about to fail as well. Couldn't find the proper rivets either but used bolts and cut to length. Used nylocks and red loctite, been a year so far just check them all the time though. Hope it saves you some grief.

  3. Good job! Great to see a young guy who can improvise in a pinch. That problem would have stopped a lot of people. I do have to admit I was a little frustrated for you, watching you use that jack handle wrench instead of a 4 way lug wrench. A stubborn lug nut can be really tough to get off with one of those not to mention being able to spin off and on the nuts, much faster if your stuck in the cold or in the rain! Still you guys have been awesome to watch. I hope there are more videos to come!

  4. Great job MacGyver. I have no idea how you that twine tight and to hold on for so long. Good job! Also, I dont know if its wrong, but i tighten the nuts more than finger tight while the wheel is up. I tighten until the wheel turns…not all but a few, that way when the weight is down on it, you know it wont move, and then I finish tightening. Thanks guys!

  5. Use Loctite Blue 242 to seal and lock clean bolts. It seals the thread against corrosion as well as locking it in place. Blue Loctite is medium strength and intended for parts than need to be disassembled with hand tools. I have always used it and never had a brake bolt back out. I drive a Jeep on overland trips and used to drive an F250 on washboard roads regularly.

  6. I have owned several dodge vans and pick-ups that used this part and have several friends and relatives that have had them also. I have never seen or heard of this problem before.  I have several thoughts on this.  If Loctite or a lock washer was required, it would come with the kit.  The plate that you lost was made out of spring steel.  It has a bend in it. When you tighten it down correctly you flatten the plate.  It keeps pressure on the bolt just like a lock washer.  Make sure you tighten it enough.  That being said I always keep some Removable Loctite on hand and it won't hurt to use some here.

  7. thank you for mentioning that you were aware of the wind noise and that you're going to fine a solution to the problem cuz that is the only thing I hate about your videos. I didn't want to say anything about it before because that is rude but since you brought it up… umm… yeah.. the wind noise is killing the sound of your voices and hurting the quality of the video experience for your viewers. But other then that annoying wind noise, your videos are the bomb!!!

  8. when you got the tires replaced they prob had the wheel/rim leaning on the caliper where the bracket is before they put the wheel back on and probably loosened that bracket up happens all the time on dodge vans because the rims are heavier than most and balance them on it to get a better grip to put it on the lug studs

  9. Didn't know changing a tire was so simple. Time consuming yes, but easy if you have all the tools. I literally learned how to change one because of your videos. xD

  10. If you skip two when tightening an eight bolt wheel you will naturally do a full circle. Also might be a good idea (I'm sure you have heard this before) to check the bolt tightness after driving for a while. Great video, love your channel, both the old stuff and the new!

  11. Hi Guys… I have been watching your videos with interest . I heard the knocking noise on the video. Kinda knew what it was . Had that happen to me a couple of times. Have a Dodge Mini Van . We live in Happy Valley Goose Bay. Not far from the Royal Inn. Been here for 32 yrs We are originally from Corner Brook. Made the trip to Corner brook a few times . Planning on hooking on our trailer and spending some time on the island this summer. The pavement from Lab City to Goose is completed and the South Coast Rd to the Ferry only has 240 kl left to pave. The Apollo is replaced with a new ferry. Things have slightly improved
