Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

I am going to try this with my large leaf culinary basil. I have so many freezer bags full of pesto ice cubes which are great, but I think this will be another great way to enjoy the bounty of basil. You have inspired me to try some different varieties that I wasn't sure how to use. If I can find the seeds I think I will still have time to try to grow.
I’m planting more basil tomorrow, I have more than 50 days. I already have lemon Basil, I can’t wait to make a batch in the morning, to try!
What books do you recommend that are good and very informative in regards of learning about herbal medicine and medicinal herbs and flowers and such?
I started growing Tulsi Basil from seed (per your suggestion) It has become my favorite plant in the garden. The fragrance is amazing. Bees love it. Heat & drought tolerant. I just need to try your tea recipe to seal the deal making it my forever favorite herb. Great video and excellent discussion!
Great job Taylor!!!
I'm excited about the citrus basil for tea. I love lemon balm but can't consume it as I am hypo-thyroid. I can have basil though! 🙂
Can I ask, is the ‘citrus basil’ lemon or lime basil? Or is there actually a variety of Citrus Basil?
Great teaching video. I've got wild mint & a camping trip coming up. I'm going to follow the method I learned here for us to have mint tea!
I make a cold sweet mint tea. Most mint teas I've seen were always hot, but oh the plain mint tea makes an amazing sweet iced tea
I love this! I've grown cinnamon basil the past couple years and really don't know how to use it very well but the idea of making tea with it is genius
I recently use Jess’ suggestion of strawberry basil water. I let it steep too long and it was really potent. Decided to make simple syrup with it. 3/4 c sugar to 2c infused water. Did the same with peaches/basil. Wow. I can dollop in tea, water, mix with rum or vodka. Geezalou!
Thanks Taylor!
I enjoy basil tea and thyme tea is one of my new favorites. Sometimes add lemon balm and/or peppermint or just brew plain.
Jess can we use just regular plain basil? The kind I grow is for my tomatoes and sauces.
Must try this thanks
Mary's Nest just did a video on making your own vinegar, which I started last month. I just finished it and It was so incredibly easy. She got her ideas from the YouTube channel rain country, who is amazing. She has a recipe for mint and banana skin vinegar that taste like a lemon alternative. She uses it when canning for a lemon juice alternative. Amazing how it tastes. Making vinegar was so easy. You should try it with the kids.
We grew stevia for the first time this year and never thought to use it to sweeten basil tea…I think we'll try steeping it all together! I've been using our lemon basil in ice water with either strawberries or blueberries and it's delicious!!
Just a thought! MAKE SURE TO RINSE THE STRAINER IN BETWEEN DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF TEAS. DON’T TO MIX FLAVORS.
That looks great. Going to have to grow some Basil.
Thanks for the great idea!
That’s sounds so good. I have several basils. I will try this thank you
Oooh I would love to do this gonna look at my local nursery to see if they have some
My favorite basil is Thai basil, I will try this !!! TY Jess and Taylor
Enjoyed Taylor and your sweet self , and the wonderful tea creations from other types of Basil that we all may have … Happy brewing..
