  1. I’m still not confident using tattler lids when pressure canning. I did mushrooms last year and 4 of 12 jars failed to seal. Probably user error, but just know there is a learning curve.

    I’ve purchased several 100 of both sizes but haven’t been forced to use them as I lucked out and was able to purchase 2 cases of ball wide mouth lids last year. Last month I was able to purchase a sleeve of regular mouth lids on the recommendation of Leisa at Sutton’s Daze. So, I’m set for awhile. My plan is to start using a few of my Tattler lids in each canning session so if they fail I can stick them in the freezer and not loose all the food. Those mushrooms were a LOT of work!

    I’ve been known to reuse lids from water bathed jars. Like you, I don’t reuse pressure canned lids. I haven’t had any failures so I’ll continue doing it in order to save money and precious resources-new lids!

    Thanks for bringing this topic up. Too many people are “holier than thou” about reusing lids. We have to do what we have to do these days…

  2. I have used Tattler lids for years. There definitely IS a learning curve to using them. Once you figure out the correct way it is great. They are an investment, but I just ordered 6 dozen from the company this month (September, 2021) and they were delivered within a week! They have wonderful service. You can just order the replacement rubber rings too. Making them more economical in the long run.

  3. I’m from Pennsylvania close to several Amish communities. I learned just about all I know about canning from them. They reuse their lids all the time. They also remove the rings once the jars have sealed so they can reuse them the next time they can. I’ve been canning now for 10 years feeding my family of 9. I can all types of food and will make 75 quarts of something like pizza sauce at one time. So far, thank God no one has gotten sick or died.

  4. I purchased tattlers way before the lid shortage as I like the idea of needing one less thing from the store. They are awesome and I love them. But there is a huge learning curve and I recommend getting a few to experiment with first. Like some metal rings fit over the lids better then others depending on the brand, it it’s not fitting usually I just grab a different ring and it goes on fine. Also some items need more headspace, I just leave an extra 1/2” then what’s recommended to be safe. I also like that the rubber ring gets dark after use so I know which ones are used and which are new. I try to use the new ones for pressure canning (not sure if it makes a difference, that’s just my preference). One downside is the tattlers are a bit pricey if you plan on giving the jars away as gifts.

  5. Have a look at Pamela Cantrell's "Rose Red Homestead" channel. She has canned for more than 60 years, and has a PhD in science education, and she is the director of science curriculum at Dixie State University in St George, Utah. She has largely converted to the Weck canning system, which has glass lids with indefinitely reusable rubber gaskets. The system has been used in Europe for more than 90 years with reliability similar to the Ball system. She has also been okay with the Tattler and competitor Harvest Guard reusable lids. She has had a lot of problems with Kerr lids, and will not reuse Ball lids for canning of any kind. She deeply understands the chemistry and physics behind why you shouldn't.

  6. Have you looked into sealing jams and preserves with wax made for sealing? M grandma always did that and she could keep them in the pantry for years.

  7. I've reused lids and they have done fine. I also ordered reusable lids from Harvest Guard, but currently they are on back order 8 week even because of the shortage. Do what you have to, your kitchen your rules. But when i see lids in the store I always get them if I can.

  8. I’m fairly new to canning and I save my used lids to vacuum seal dry goods. I bought some tattler lids but haven’t used them yet. Hopefully they work for me.

  9. I've been canning since I was able to stand on a chair to help my grandma…65 YO Nana here. Your doing the smart thing with the reuse of lids…sometimes you have to do it cause of lack of supply, but I always reused the lids after inspection…and only on jelly, jams, chutneys or fruit that could be water bathed. Never reused for pressure canning anything. Might I suggest when you start to can meat…that you try canning Chili and then canning the beans separately, with chili powder (to make a ranch style bean). The meat AND bean combo doesn't work well IMHO. I used to always keep 40 lbs of ground beef UNFROZEN when we had our half beef processed and canned Qts of chili then Qts of ranch style beans. It was so wonderful when family dropped in unexpected…and one could just heat it up and make some tortillas and dinner done. I also used to do about 30lbs of ground pork…but made it into a sunday gravy type sauce in Qts. Again, if guest arrive I could just heat it up and put on some pasta. Goodluck, I know you will find canning meat a good way to put up good deals when freezer space might be needed for other items.

  10. I ordered Tattler rings only, I put them on the used Kerr or ball lids, they seal perfect and I can keep using both for a long time. You should can some water with the Tattler seals and Kerr lids with ring. A real money saver. And in Michigan the Kerr lids are at Walmart today, for $2.18 and wide $3.28. Check your local Walmart if you still need them.

  11. I’ve been using Tattler lids for a couple years. I seem to always have one jar out of a canner load that doesn’t seal. So, I use them for things like broth and beans — not much investment involved. They take some getting used to, so watch videos on the differences. Overall I really like them and recommend using them.

  12. Tattler lids are a great investment! My strategy is, every time I buy lids I buy one thing of tattler lids along with all the regular ones. Kind of spreads the cost out a little bit! There is a learning curve involved with the lids, because they don’t work the same as regular lids. But it isn’t difficult! I love that I don’t have to throw them away. That has always bothered me…

  13. Golden harvest on ebay. I used to use them then lost touch with them. I found them on ebay and bought a bunch of them. I did 7 quarts of beans and they worked great. Much more affordable than kerr and ball.
