Woody radishes is likely because they didn't get consistent water, not a ton of water, but consistent is what they need. Every other day.
You are correct about root crops. They need a fluffy soil. I am trying carrots for the first time but in potting soil. I am in Florida and have very sandy soil which is ideal but doesn't contain the organic material needed to provide nutrients.
I am finding out that Florida gardening is a lot different than most of the country. Sandy soil, tons of bugs, to much heat etc. Can't plant most things here in summer. Trying to find a few things that can take the heat. Okra did ok. Okinawa spinach in full shade did good. Some pole beans and peppers etc.
