I have built 2 with 55 gal barrels this year. I used a drill and then a jigsaw to cut the slots. I used a 2"x4" to pry the slot out at the bottom and in at the top while using a heat gun. I put a 4" PVC pipe down the middle with holes drilled for a worm tower. So I can plant 40 plants in the side pockets and plants in the top of the barrel. Just filled with red wigglers and planted seeds. Plants are starting terrific!

you ought to check out the garden tower by gardentowerproject, it's a very affordable, very high quality refined product if you don't want to spend 20-30 hours making a clone.
