VIDEO: Yacon update starting onion seed

Starting the 2014 season. Here I am showing the growth of the Yacon over the past week and what appears to be positive results of my attempt to root some wild rose cuttings. I’ve started some onion seed and made an indoor seed starting station. Still needs a bit of work.

  1. The yacon looks good and the seed station. I never tryed from seed with onions but your plan sounds good. Your right about the flowering in the 2nd year but somtimes if you get a hard frost and a warm patch then another frost the plant can flower the plant thinks its done two years. If you know what I mean. Do plants think? lol. Dave

  2. I am anxious to watch your onion experiment.  I grew onions from seed last year, Candy & Red Bull. They did just o.k. My fault because I didn't keep the soil mulched or keep up on watering. I am in Wisconsin and they suggest to plant 'long day' onions. I still have the 'Red Bull' in my pantry & happy to still be using them.  I am going to give onion seed another try. In fact today I plan on planting the left over 'Candy' onion seed from 2013. I need to order more seed. That is on my 'to do list'.  Keep the videos coming. Thank you for sharing.

  3. That is what I am doing today.  It is time to start some of my seeds.  Like you I want to try to start everything from seeds this year.  I don't think we have ever started tomatoes or onions from seeds, but we are going to try.

  4. AWESOME Idea on the seed station my buddy, if time fails ya on certain endeavors WE should all improvise, ya hadn't the time for establishing your greenhouse, well hopefully during this year but for now, to get a headstart on this growin' season this seed station's COOL,…thumbs up Jay, keep us posted on the Yacon's progress, your wild roses and the onions, from seeds, i bet they're kinda like asparagus, but once established they're very prolific and almost seem like they're weeds!

  5. Thank you for the update! I have all my Yacon in pots right now, but I have not been watering them. They are slightly moist though… should I be watering them, or waiting for them to sprout?

  6. This looks great, J!
I haven`t tried to sow onion before, and It will be beneficial for me to follow your growouts of them. Looking foreward to see how they go on in the future.
Your wild rose cuttings looks interesting. Cool to see they set out leaves without a plastic cover. Hope they set out some good roots for you as well. Hope they do, because its an extra job covering them up all the time.

    Best wishes,
    Halvor.

  7. I have some onion seeds too….I just haven't figured out how to use them either! 🙂 Good update overall, I'm interested in seeing how things materialize. God Bless You Brother, we should talk soon! 🙂
