I understand about not cutting down while green, but I heard to cut back to two inches when brown and then remove a good distance to a compost pile as asparagus beetles will over winter on the plant. Is this true?
Hi Luke, I did it the same way and covered my asparagus with leaves last Oktober. Now my question, do you let the leaves on the bed in springtime or do you remove it?Greatings from Germany

answered all my questions! I'm growing asparagus from 1 root in a pot on my balcony. (in Hamilton ontario zone 5? 6?)
now it's blooming, and still sending up MANY new shoots. it's stilll early, but I'll add compost in a few weeks, cover with leaves and see what happens next spring.

Hi folks! This is my first year, first winter, after planting 2 year asparagus crowns. The flourished this season, gave seed, and are very hearty for winter. So, question… how do I winter them? I laid the plants down and even had to lay some wood over them to keep them down! Do I cut them short? If so, how short? Help!

Sould I use barrier cloth before straw for winter here in WYOMING? I have a three foot high boxed bedding area. my first year grow asparagus and it all came up, hope to keep it from freezing!

Cut them when they turn yellow and cover them with compost then mulch. You could also add stone dust etc. Before the compost snd mulch.
If you have any red berries ( it's seed) then ether grow them inside and transplant latter or let them lay with the rest of the plants.
I know a man that turned 90 thiscyear and allbhescdone is burn them in fall and add leaves. Hes been getting a good yeald for 45 + years now.
I too had great first year growth following the suggestions in your videos. It is now spring and I see new stalks coming up and they are thicker than a pencil. Should I remove the leaves that remain from the winter from the bed? They are quite thick. I don’t want them to inhibit sun

I pruned mine when it got cold and covered with leaves. Hope I didn't screw them up.
i must be missing something. my 6 mary washingtons, i stuck in a bin when i bought them, just to keep alive. each has multiple ferns, but they each also have a really thin asparagus which is definitely not a fern, but looks like a miniature asparagus stalk. i thought ferns were just the vehicle for feeding the asparagus.
I’m barely in Zone 6a here in West Michigan. It’s almost mid September and I just got asparagus seeds from a friend, can I plant them in a super large plastic pot now or should I wait for early Spring?

I am in So Calif and am getting a lot of what looks like rust on my ferns. Is this normal?.They are 2 year old plants. I am worried its a disease maybe caused by top watering or not enough water. Does it mean its time to cut back the ferns that have turned rusty looking?…

Planted asparagus for 1st time. Should I weed a bit before topping with leaves??? Do you cover the asparagus with leaves, too?? We started with roots.
Hi Luke, not sure if you still read comments from videos this "old". I have a question about over wintering asparagus. I have a bed of asparagus; Mary Washington, year 2. Bought the seeds from your website 🙂 I Have been watching several videos that recommend cutting back anywhere from all the way to the ground, to 2" above ground and adding a layer of mulch to protect them. Reasoning was to stop asparagus beetles from overwintering. You have the only video that recommended not cutting back. I am very confused and wonder if you have any insight into this? I also live in the north/great lakes. Buffalo area.
