We have been conditioned to think there needs to be a row of bare dirt along plants. It is neat to see nature is converting your neighbor's yard back to a layered food forest. They planted the middle layers of at least the understory apple and climbing berries at one time, and nature is filling in with small plants and groundcover. There are no wild chickens to feed and nest directly as a balance but it would certainly work. Interesting.
Do y'all deal with cedar/apple rust? I can't grow any apple trees where I am because of it (we're in Rutherford County TN).
Thank you for this. I have debated whether to put one of my blackberries under an apple that is not doing so well to see if it would help. At least I know it wouldn't hurt. Thank you!
