Don’t let the winter weather stop you from gardening – you can still enjoy healthy fresh produce by sprouting beans.
Sprouting seeds in a juice carton prevents them from becoming bitter by excluding light. This simple trick can make the process much easier than traditional methods.
In this short video we show you how to prepare beansprouts so that you can have tasty, fresh produce in just a few days for dishes such as stir-frys and soups.

Why can't I use an almond milk carton?
Is there any other container you could recommend? I don't buy anthing except soymilk in containers like this and you mentioned in the video that one should only use containers that had acidic juices in them.
Alfalfa
I've grown mung beans before, but i don't allow the beans to grow a long tail, the mung beans lose some nutrients if overly grown… i do enjoy eating sprouted beans raw, and sometimes mixed into my meals…
How long will they last once sprouted?
Thanks for showing us how to do it – it's most helpful as this time. All the best, Patrick
I've grown mung beans in both a qt mason jar & a 2pc colander set. I liked the ease of the colander set best (plastic colander that fits inside a plastic bowl but leaves at least an inch of space between for drainage.) Twice a day I just fill a large tumbler with filtered water & pour evenly over sprouts. Shake a couple times to drain, empty the water collection bowl underneath & set the colander back in it. Tuck a paper towel over the sprouts and leave it. Less water waste, this way.
I grow Fenugreek (which is really nice)and Aduki bean's, I grow them in jars.
I just was wondering about mold and or fungus when doing this. Do you have any suggestions about how to prevent these, like wheres a good spot to store the container? I have a small air purifier running in my plant room so Id assume thats the cleanest room in my house so I could leave it in there but that room tends to get on the warmer side, around 60-70 degrees F all day. Any suggestions would be helpful!
This is all new to me so thank you, I didn't realise bean sprouts were that easy to grow, I love n stir fries.
If bacteria is the worry wouldn't a soak with Potassium Metabisulfite (horrors, a chemical!) work to sterilize the container once washed? I use that for sterilizing all my brew/wine/cider fermenters.
The best video I've seen for sprouting beans. Thank you for this video. Doing it now.
=)
Do you prefer or choose juice boxes instead of clear plastic bottles for a specific reason? I've never seen it done in a container that isn't clear until now. How do you feel about empty clear plastic soda bottles or any other reuseable plastic container that can be easily filled and drained?
I've been soaking my mung beans for about 10 hours now. I can't wait to box them in the drinks carton tonight. This method seems so simple. FINGERS-CROSSED it works for me. Thanks for the great vid. 🙂
ingenious- too bad we do not use any drink cartons BUT there is a way around, i just set them in the cupboard to keep them dark.
Cool! Thanx for the idea ^_^
enjoyed your video
Here in India, these beans will have properly sprouted practically overnight. Just put them in just enough water to cover them, no more. And hey, don't remove the husks – whether you plan to eat 'em or grow 'em into plants. They contain about 25% of the nutrition!
so many videos showing how to grow sprouts, but everytime I ask how to freeze mung sprouts I get a list of how to grow its frustating can u please tell me how to freeze once I tried and they turned limp and soggy so please help thanks
The first time I grew them they were perfect and delicious, I grew them in exactly the same way again and some of them were slightly purple and tasted very bitter. I heard that only happens when they've been exposed to sunlight but could there be any other cause?
Could you please do a similar video about soya bean sprouts, thanks!
Very, very interesting. Love it.
What a stupid method which washes off the nutrients. Delete this misleading video.
You may tried it tomato paste.on it along with turmeric and indian Masala with paratha hmmmm
1.Steamed bean sprouts with peanut sauce
2. Sautéed with oil mustard seeds, ginger and red chili
3. Add to curries
I sprout lentil beans. Lots cheaper in Aldi than mung beans from the health food store.
My daughter in law works at a prestigious research center. A paid study was made on the toxicity of the plastic layer in food cartoons. They are very toxic and damage the brain and its synapsis. Have you tried it with glass containers? Oh the results of the investigation cannot be published because it was paid.
