I would leave the roots alone and slide a nursery pot where any branch sticks out of the soil. Same idea as air layering but it at soil level. Remove new trees and a new branch will replace the one removed.

That's cool you can propagate figs that way. The nice thing about figs you don't have to prune them alot a couple of the clamshells and you're good 🙂
