  1. I finally had to build a winter house for my yard cat. He may be feral, but he earns his minimal keep by mousing the yard! Drilled a 5 inch hole in the end of an ice chest with a hole bit, then stashed a smaller tall-sided round bed inside. Also made a heated water dish for him using a smaller milking bucket, and a 12 volt immersion heater element on a solar panel>battery setup. I know its not much, but its what I can do for him and he seems to appreciate it. Winter is rough on animals, whether (semi-)domesticated or not.

  2. I keep forgetting to tell you but I love your new intro! I'm a firm believer in keeping things cleaned..especially in a barn so good for you! The winter seems to be a warmish one for now and I dread what is to come! Will you get a bunch of snow or do you just get the really cold temps?

  3. We've got 2 1/2 foot of snow on the ground. But, surprisingly we haven't dropped below zero at all. Usually by now we've had some -20 nights at least, knock on wood. We gave up on heated waterers in the coop last winter. Tried everyone out there. They are there we just don't depend on them. Some better than others but, with temps down below -10 they started falling to the wayside. It's just as easy to take fresh water out every time we go and check on them. The is a heated base out there this winter though that hasn't froze up yet like it did last winter. We shovel snow out from under the pop out door, around the door, throw new bedding in the coop every couple of days and then when some of the snow melts off, clear out some of the bedding to compost and throw fresh stuff in. The hens don't go out much but, they do wander out in the middle of the day for a bit. I'd like to get the time next spring summer to get something built to cover some of the outside area for them to get into in these high snow times. Egg production has been down apparently for everyone in the state according to the poultry group and for about 6 weeks I was getting 3 eggs from 12 hens. I put the light on the timer in the coop and in about 3 weeks I was back up to about 8 a day. Ahhhhh, the winter life.

  4. DE is some good stuff. I use it in the garden when I have unwanted bugs show up. It has to be reapply after it gets rain on, but in South Texas that is only a couple of times a season. I use DE inside the house also. I dust it any where I won't walk threw it. I find 30+ scorpions a year inside the house and since I started using DE they are either dead or are on the way to be dead. One year I was stung five times in bed. Since I started using DE and haven't be stung in bed since.

I have even dusted the dog with DE when fleas showed up. I gave the dog a bath after a few days after treating it. When Seven Dust was still around, it was mostly DE. If I remember right, it was only 5% or 7% Seven dust. The rest was DE. I'm guessing the DE did a better job than the Seven at killing bugs.

  5. i once saw someone leave the chicken stool in the coop to keep it warm through winter? Isn't that bad for their health? Also would you ever consider starting an internship? lol Great work on this channel and thank you!! 🙂

  6. would D.E. keep mice out of a coop? just this winter the mice have been terrible and ive found two nest and i thought they were gone but i just saw two more this morning, and im not sure whats the best way to keep them away from my chickens and bunny coops.
