The conext would be that we are running out of topsoil….A rough calculation of current rates of soil degradation suggests we have about 60 years of topsoil left. Some 40% of soil used for agriculture around the world is classed as either degraded or seriously degraded – the latter means that 70% of the topsoil, the layer allowing plants to grow, is gone…..I did not believe it either when I read this but I initially learned about it through Jon Jeavons.
100% agree! We have a Juice Plus Tower Garden and live in the city. If I had garden space (dirt plot). I’d grow my veg. for my family there.
I live in the desert and on a community well, water is a precious commodity. I have some of the worst soil in the country, so my problems are double. I started with building a compost pile. Not a fancy high cost one just a hole in the ground with emitters from my drip line. It took many years but I have pretty good soil now. I now have started using straw bales, they work great for tomatoes. Plus I can use the straw in my compost after the season is over. The key is using what you have and not wasteing what you have. I do have grass but the clippings heat up the compost.
I have to add, I usually have so much extra food I end up giving it away. I would love to sell some for profit but am uncertain of how to do this.
Would it be possible to consider using both?

There are cheap, low-tech ways to do hydroponics, such as Kratky. I think aquaponics is possibly a delusion in terms of thinking that the fish poop provides sufficient nutrients. Look up Harley Smith at NPK Industries to get a deep understanding of plant nutrition.

Seems higher the tech the more that can or will go wrong. But innovation is cool
I had actually looked at the tower hydroponics strictly for herbs. Other than that didn't seem practical.
Hydroponics is not cheap, if may be the world only wants to eat greens. Unless we can grow trees in hydroponics, it will never compete with traditional farming.
There’s nothing wrong with hydroponics. People who do hydroponics and can’t understand why you don’t are especially annoying.

Stupid people don't use hydroponics/aeroponics cause they aren't interested in learning, this guy is the dumbest successful youtube Farmer lol dumby, he could 3x his OVERALL money with aeroponics
Hydroponic is justifiable, simply because, there's not enough suitable soil for many variants of plants.
I think that with the eventual food shortage because of growing populations, farmers should use hydroponics for all leafy greens, then soil-based farming could be used to grow fruits and bigger vegetables. Or the soil that had been freed up can be used as reforestation.
i thought this would be more educational. so the downside to hydro is just the startup cost?
i wish i saw this video before spending my money on the hydro systems xD But i do like that once you set it up, it pretty much grows itself
Everybody is going high tech and if you stay there then you will be left behind. My teacher once told me what is better to use, a cow / ox plowing the field or a tractor? Yes you can go with the animals plowing the field but you put more of your effort your strength your time in there and i think you will lose more in that. Just saying.
