VIDEO: What We Found When We Dug Up a 15+ Year Old Asparagus was AMAZING

We were digging up a perennial asparagus to show everyone how to
transplant a perennial properly, so we dug up a 15+ year old asparagus
plant from the beach, in soft nutrient rich sand. What we uncovered was
simply amazing.

  1. Why didn't you break it up into different pieces? Do you think it would have been possible?
Anyways…great video…let us know how it does.

  2. Not a bad video, but as large and impressive as the roots shown are, many – especially the deeper ones – were cut off and left behind.

A plant as old as that (15+ years), especially in such a light and easy-to-penetrate soil as was the case, would usually have a HUGE root system. Even just a 6 year old plant was found to have roots that extended 4+ feet all around, horizontally, and over 10 feet deep:

  3. Can you divide that crown up new separate plants? After 15 years can you dig one up, divide it, and hit the reset button? Will the old piece of crown make new spears if the new crown is not there?
