VIDEO: The Best Chicken For Sustainability~Ms. Homestead Lady Wisdom

When we ask Ms. Homestead Lady her personal preference on the best chicken she feels is for sustainability, this is her (and husband, “Cowboy’s”) pick. They have raised these birds for generations and compared them to many close seconds, but they say they offer the best of all worlds-Great eggs, great meat, broodiness, great foragers and very protective roosters. These are all qualities a true homestead will seek in a chicken breed in a true self-reliance scenario. Enjoy and thanks for watching! xo

  1. I am starting to seriously plan my homestead. I kid you not I was researching chickens today. I never even heard of white rocks. I thought leghorns for eggs and the meat birds. Thanks for this. Definitely worthy of serious consideration lol. I'm sold. Janice

  2. I enjoy learning more about chickens every time I watch these videos . I live in a rural neighborhood I'm not allowed to have chickens but shhh I do anyway lol I raised them from chick's I'm waiting till they get old enough to produce eggs they are about 5 to 5 1/2 months now.

  3. We are planning to start doing the jumbo Cornish cross at first and then if we can one day we are gonna do buff orpingtons and australorp for both meat and eggs. But for now we just don't have a coop to support the amount needed to feed a family of four without affecting the population too much. Have you ever done a video on barn size for flock size?

  4. I was raised right on the Alabama Tennessee state line by my mom, great grandmother n grandfather. we had these chickens and I could not think of the name of them for nothing! I am so thankful you did this video. even tho it looks like we won't have be getting chickens until sometime the next year or so I have been planning ahead and really thinking of what I wanted to start off with. I'm starting off slow and hoping to do things the right way and not get ahead of myself. I'm a single parent of two kids and one with special needs so planning ahead is a must. we live in an apartment right now but looking to buy a house the first of next year. can't wait. but planning ahead! I'm learning so much from you and I want you to know I am very appreciative. it brings back the teaching of my granny and can't help but feel hopeful and even a feeling of home. thank you!

  5. Wow! Thank you. This year I got the meat birds everyone gets. But, I told my husband I wanted a bird that hatched it's self. Not man made. Those birds look Awesome! Please let homestead Lady know I have so much respect for them. Glad they can teach us.

  7. I cannot explain in words how much I appreciate your views, videos, and advice, especially in these uncertain, scary times. Thank you, Patara, and God bless!

  8. Thank you, Patara, for all your information. We're starting our homestead, and hope to get our flock started next year. I appreciate your (un)common sense viewpoint.

  9. I have couple of these hens. They are big, beautiful in white color and laying tons of eggs. I can Not saying any negativity about this breed. They are truly magnificent bird.

  10. Are the others Buff Rocks or Orpingtons? And are their eggs fertilized by the same Roo? We are ordering our White Rock hens and roo's. Now I am wondering if we need to add some buff rocks or orp's

  11. I am assuming Ms. Homestead Lady is not a channel anymore? I keep looking for her and I cannot find her nor do I see you mention her in any recent videos. D:
