  1. Patara, you and your family have my respect and admiration.  My husband was sharing yet another political Fecesbook post when I interrupted sweetly and told him I want to listen to my Homestead Lady but thanked him for sharing (we're Libertarians) and he wanted to know why.  When he listened with me, he was shocked and impressed.  This type of thing really doesn't hit home to men folks.  They're too used to their women taking care of the house/meals/laundry/etc. while they take care of the outdoor stuff, 'least that's how my men (husband and 2 teen sons) are built.  I've suggested sweetly that my Christmas present will consist of a brick fire pit about waist high and since he wants to teach our oldest to weld, he can make several small angle-iron and expanded metal mesh inserts for cooking outdoors, under an awning and since my husband works in the electrical field, it'll be lit somehow…perhaps a solar panel or two.  You've been my inspiration and well, if they want a full belly when the lights go out and the propane is depleted, their empty bellies will inspire them!  Needless to say, I'm looking forward to challenging myself.  We have several boxes of #10 cans full of Montana Hard Red Winter Wheat berries and a Country Living Mill (and a Magic Mill) and both are currently motorized but the CL mill also has a handle for manual use.  Thanks for mentioning the use of several types of milk.  You're right…dairy, especially the creaminess of milk in everything from muffins to pudding, makes the morale level higher!  I'm ecstatic to know you can meats!  I mentioned it at church and the older ladies there look at me as if I just sprouted a third eye.  Gosh, there is NOTHING easier or faster than popping open a quart of browned, canned brisket, heating it up in it's natural aux jus, adding a packet of Knorr gravy mix, popping open a jar of potatoes and mashing them up with some canned milk and canned butter then sautéing a jar of your canned carrots with some canned butter and a few sprinkles of dried parsley to make a tummy really happy…and all in less than 10 minutes.  God Bless you for taking us on your journey with you.

  2. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series! Got me to thinking! I am rounding out preps and now need to test myself and see where the real holes in the system are. Thank you you Patara for sparking a fire under my seat to do some stuff!!

  3. I learned about keeping plenty of baking supplies and basic food stores when we 'went frugal'.  When I started cooking more from scratch, I learned I burn through a ton of flour. 😉  Also, we've had a couple of horrendous ice storms here in WV (one just a couple of Octobers ago) where we were schooled in preparedness.  Always better safe than sorry.  Great video and series!

  4. don't know if it would be of help to anyone, but for anyone who has a Sam's,Costco or whatever big type store and can go with someone who has a membership or have one of your own, baking soda, cornstarch, baking powder, beans, rice and flour are really cheap in our area for mass quantity with the exception of if i find a good sale on that type stuff… love ya girl, Thanks for everything.. you have taught this old gal lots of new things..

  5. Good stuff Patara, Thank you for sharing your lessons with us! BTW: Our family appreciates the recommendation you gave on Cream Legbars – we just got these sweeties (penned 'The You Tubers') and OH MY GOSH! We love this breed and wow are they smart, I mean, who knows how to dust bathe at 1 week of age??? Oh Yes, we do have a 'Patara' hen, named in your honor…….loving this flock, HUGS!!!!

  6. Great video & as usual full of so much useful information. You are making all of us stop and think of everything that we would more than likely not even consider. Thank you & your family for cheering you on while you are educating yourself and us. .. Oh love the "burn it to Learn it" I can hear your husband teasing you about it.. 🙂 ((hugs & smiles))

  7. Baking powder only stays active for a few months, but you can make your own as needed by combining baking soda with cream of tartar. Both of those store separately much much longer than baking powder.

  8. Patera, thank you so much for all the information, reality talk, and encouragement.  "You have to burn it to learn it" is my new motto as I try to become more homesteady and self reliant.  I canned some pickles today for the first time ever canning anything.  I broke one jar putting it into the canner when the water was a little too hot.  I could have gotten discouraged and said "I'm never doing this again–I don't know what I'm doing."  BUT, I just thought of you and said to myself "You have to burn it to learn it."  Or in my case break it to learn it.  On a happier note, I ended up processing 11 pints of pickles that have all sealed!  Such a feeling of accomplishment.  Keep the great videos coming.  I enjoy them and learn so much.

  9. Would you be surprised to know that fresh milk is not only served on Aircraft Carriers but also on the small ships mostly world wide. The only exception is in the Indian Ocean where UHT milk is served. Never in my 28 years was I ever served powdered milk to drink although the cooks my use it for meal prep but I wasn't a cook. We absolutely love your channel.

  10. I'm looking forward to your videos on the pork! I hope you show how you render the fat! I hear you on everything you have to say. I got a bunch of perennial herbs going in my garden. My neighbor has feverfew growing like a weed so she gave me a bunch of that. I need to get some chamomile going though. Mint does go crazy and can be hard to get rid of! I'm slowly building up my powdered milk supply too and spices. Thanks again for all your good points ans ideas!

  11. I have been prepping for a while on a bitty monthly budget. I appreciate these videos and you make some very good points. Thank you. One thing I just learned was what I call the "water factor". I did an experiment last month and I was shocked at the amount of water, which I have to buy here in Mex., that was necessary to make those long term storage items that I had. Needless to say that this month's preps were different, focusing on how much water would it take for me to make that item. It was a wake up.
