  1. I live in Long Beach in Southern Calif. I am having a problem with cabbage aphids on my Brussels sprouts. I am using neem oil and/or hosing them off. Is there a better way to avoid them or a companion plant that will keep them away? Thank you !

  2. I've grown beautiful 'Sprouts as shown in the piece, but left them in the ground unharvested in NH Winter, to dig the plant with a pointed shovel from frozen ground, as a frozen root ball, and plunging the entire plant, rootball and all into room temperature large pail of water and allow to stand at room temperature or cooler, above freezing, indoors, such as a cut flower in a vase. But the root is not removed until 'Sprouts are consumed. All remaining large leaves may be snapped off, or not. Pick the Sprouts as you use them. The water revives the Sprouts even though they may not appear fresh, they are. Outer portion of the 'Sprouts exposed to Winter are not removed. Use fresh water when bringing in another Brussels Sprout or after a week or more.
Hint: When cooking rice include 'Sprouts, with mustard or onion etc. to taste, or seasoning to taste, can be added for an easy, one-pot recipe.

  3. I went to a farmer, got some plants specifically for small garden space. The pictures showed the Brussel sprouts stem. Didn't know they took so much space. 3 of them taking over one side of the garden. Robbing Sun light from other plants.

So I just cut off leafs, would leave them with enough leaves to survive. They were growing tall. Once the sprouts started coming out, I cut off the terminal bud in each plant. Continue to cut off leafs, and I'm waiting for sprouts to form. But I'll never grow them again. It's the first time I have had to spray pesticide. Because these plants brought Cabbage Worms and they have a ferocious appetite. One time my Hyacinth Bean Vines had Mexican Bean Beatles. But they wasn't that bad to manage.

  4. I am trying to prevent a potential loss! After 30 plus years of gardening I'm doing Brussels sprouts for the first time. They take allll season up here in Mass. Half are doing ok, tall with luscious leaves. But the other have got chewed up so much by pests they have little to no leaves. Can they be saved? Will they bounce back? I'm an obsessive pruner, I don't want sick or pest- compromised leaves on my plants. But could I have pruned these to oblivion? Main stems look fine btw. Thank you!

  5. Hello mate ian Jones here from port Stephens in nsw. First time at growing Brussel sprouts do they always fall over. We had some strong winds a week ago and some of mine were laying down so I steamed them up again. Did I do the right thing ? Thanks in advance.
    Regards IanJones

  6. Interesting tutorial. For me, you underestimate the proximity of plants for a good crop: 10 inches seems much to close, I'd give it at least 18 inches. I like the advice on clubroot and also the tips to remove tops and extraneous leaves later in the season. Thank you.

  7. That’s interesting about breaking the leaves off to get larger sprouts, I also saw on a channel ( I don’t remember which one ) to encourage onions to grow bigger at a certain point in the onions growth you should break over the greens to stop them from getting bigger and encourage the bulbs to grow. Now I’ll have to look for that video.

  8. This is the video of yours i have watched I was looking to find out what if anything I maybe doing incorrectly. and for me you are a not practiced in your presentation and found you very annoying and not that infinitive! may be i will check back in a year and see if you have improved so keep trying thanks

  9. If you grow them in the fall when do you break the leaves off? In 7b they don’t sell plants until after Labor Day and our first frost is the first week in November.

  10. Thank you for coming up with this video, it is very helpful .I cut the canes off of my Brussel sprouts plants below, and they have started growing back double like when you cut the heads off of a Dragon. the brussel sprouts are still small but I think that I'm going to get another Harvest in Spring. Is this normal?

  11. Ive already got 2 kinds of Brussels sprouts seeds for next year! I can't wait! I love fresh Brussels from our farmers market still on the stock! Great price only $7. & I picked 67 off it which was 3 side dishes but Im excited to grow my own!! Thanks for the great tips!!
