Nice tip. Here on my permaculture farm in NC it only rains when a hurricane is destroying the coast.
I will let the trees struggle yes, but I will water during drought or they would all die. I will water less each year for a few years till established.
thinking that if you pruned heavily on the bigger trees that they root system to tree ratio would have been better for em.
