Curtis: if the microgreens get no effective nutrients from the potting soil mix (your comment circa 1:32), would perlite or vermiculite work just as well? These media could then be sterilized and reused (I guess so could sunshine #3).

I wonder if adding minerals to the soil mix or the water would improve the nutrient profile of the microgreens? Ever tested for that? I bet Mike Adams (the Health Ranger) would test them for you if not.

Is it ok to buy soil by the yard or does it need to be bagged? I heard mention of the soil needing to be sterile before. We were thinking of using one earth organic compost that we get by the yard.
yield may be the same with soil/no soil. But i wonder if nutrient content of the microgreens could be different? I guess its hard to know without lab testing.
Curtis I’ve seen you say sunshine 3 for micros and 5 (screened) for potting, but as far as I can tell the only difference in ingredients is substituting vermiculite for perlite, respectively. I’m sure I’m missing something? Thank you for everything, including the always perfectly framed talking head shots, as a videographer and audio engineer as well, I find myself laughing constantly at how well shot and edited your vids are considering your work pace.
After you sprout one series with this mix, do you re-use it for another after you take out the seeds etc… from the just harvested mix? If so, how many usages do you get from that? This is expensive where I live.
Soil is dirty. Too much can go wrong. I use paper towel lol you can just pick it up and pull it. In fact, you don't need any medium. Use a ceramic plate if you want too. Just gotta keep those seeds moist.
When you wash microgreens after harvest, they don't last as long either. Hate working with soil. No offense to the OP.

Maybe you haven’t noticed any differences in growth with or without added compost etc, but it’s not all about yield, is it? Have you done done studies on the nutritional value as well? As a customer and an newbie apartement-gardener, my focus is on how much nutrients and minerals a plant has been given a chance to absorb. That’s kind of the whole idea with eating (organic) vegetables – to get as much nutrients, minerals etc that you can. I’m not saying you are wrong, I’m just raising the question that many times seems to get less focus from producers…
I'm a greenthumb… And just curious… Wouldn't the higher quality soil (worm cast example) create a more nutrient dense yield?

How can i be certain that the “organic” soil that I am buying is completely free of biosolid/sewer sludge/humanure???
Nutrients in the soil might not have to do with “yield”, but they certainly have to do with the “nutrition” IN the green,plant, fruit, veg etc.
The roots suck up all of that nutrition in the soil and convert it into digestable useable nutrition for our bodies.
Maximum soil nutrients = nutrient dense food!
Poor soil nutrients = inadequate nutrients in food = having to take supplements.
(If it’s not in the soil it will not be in the food)

There is NO comercial solo compost in my city in south america … a few that i see are extremely expensive ..
what to do ?
Could I use pro mix hp or any kind of soil from promix ?

So many use those white pads in the bottom of their trays. Why do you use soil mixes if it’s unnecessary? Could you use unbleached paper towel or does that not work? Have you done comparative studies? Thanks, Curtis! You’re the best!
You said there wasn't a different in terms of YIELD, but of course that isn't the only thing to take into consideration–what about the quality? What about the flavor?
Hello, wondering what your process is for the soil after you sow a microgreen tray. Do you reuse it, compost it or how do you dispose of it?

If microgreens don't any need nutrients from the soil, then why use any media at all? People sprout seeds for fodder to feed their livestock without bothering with media or lights… So what is the cost/benefit analysis?
