Homesteading is not the land of rainbows, unicorns, & pegasus. We have certainly discussed Life & Death On A Homestead in several videos. Here is another side of it. If you are a chicken owner, you must know that cannibalism is a reality. You must also know that if you have a compromised bird, this is something that could also happen. Be prepared to handle all situations.
Thanks for watching! xo

You never know about those chickens…I go to the coop one day and my easiest going sweet hen is soaked and muddy…I take her in and clean her up..take her back and they all start jumping on her so I just leave her out thinking Why r they picking on this sweet girl??…day or so later she is fighting herself in the reflection of my storm door glass! I don't know what clicked in her but she enjoyed her free ranging when she wasn't fussing at her reflection lol
Great info for us, thanks!
if needed, I will bring a sick hen in the house to take special care till she is well…
I mean I wish it didn't happen at all…but I hope it wasn't someone we knew and loved? Sorry about one of your girls.
I have a quick question, my hen pepper was a barred rock and recently past. She was perfectly fine before she passed. She also was completely in tack, she had no cuts or injuries. My other hens didn't even touch her, but she had just died. Do you think it was sudden deaths syndrome??
Agree with your video.
Great video! Just out of interest, what do you do with the remains of the hen when this happens?
Miss Patera…y'all woulda been been, to most public/private school graduates, "the best teacher I ever had".
yeah hi I was watching a video on foul pox wet pox what else do they get and what are all the treatments for them
I had chickens that did that they didn't leave any blood in it and it was basically just skin and bones
All foods have protein. Veggies, fruits, nuts seeds etc. Chickens attacking each other has nothing to do with getting their protein. It's just that pecking order thing they get into.
Wow! Does that sort of thing happen often?
can you do you video about you goats
Ducks don't do that, do they?
sorry for your losses Patera, and appreciate that you are able to keep it all in perspective. even as we do our best things happen. I've lost 2 in this first year of chicken keeping.
I got 4 new chicks today. 1 buff orphington, 1 barred rock, 1 rode island red, and 1 silver laced wydonat (idk how to spell it)
zombie chickens !!! thanks for the info was very helpful – love the intro made me laugh, expected a vincent price laugh in the background. all kidding aside, thanks again for sharing this info
Bunnies are so cute and adorable. They too can be cannibalistic. We had a doe that if she got stressed she would eat her babies. We learned to put vanilla on her nose if we were going to check on the babies.
love your presentation, pertinent, real and with class. thank-you for good helpful information!
Thank you for this video, it was very helpful to know before I get my chickens
yea it's in their nature, even as young chicks they will pick at a sick or injured one, they can tell if something ain't right with the other ones and if not noticed quick enough they will kill each other, and more often then not it don't take long at all.
I thought blu kote makes the eggs and meat inedible indefinitely?
Rhode Island Reds are known for bullying. The best answer is to clip their beaks.I
would like to know if you could use a suet bird block in the hen house to provide extra protein?
Great video, thanks for the info!
