2. The place looks like an old plantation to me with arbitrarily laid-out (i.e. not on contour) roads and rows.

3. We are on a similar journey. I have some land and we are establishing a permaculture food forest. My inlaws have very different ideas to the permaculture way. I think they do what they do because that's the way it has always been done. Where as I take a long term, minimum amount of labor for maximum yield approach. They are happy to weed areas and burn. They will clear the land beneath a tree and leave it bare. I chop and drop and mulch. So we are starting on an interesting journey and education together.
   The seasons here in Thailand tend to be monsoon rains and brutal heat with a litle normality between the two. The rivers around Chiang Rai & Pai often flood in the monsoon. Come the dry season, you can't breathe for landowners burning fields.
