  1. My grandparents had 8 children on a small homestead of pigs, chickens and always had at least one milk cow. Mom says it was never that kind of financial burden for them. My grandparents raised their family during the Great Depression era and still didn't have the financial burden that comes with homesteading today. My theory on this issue is….. In grandmas day, human greed hadn't taken hold as it has today. Everyone wants to get rich quick now. This mindset has created the financial burden for the little guy who just wants to be self sufficient and do the best he can for his family and the environment. It doesn't have to be this hard. Greed is the culprit. With that being said….. I have to tell ya. Petara, I LOVE your videos! You are a wealth of information! Thanks so much for helping people understand the reality of homesteading today. I have witnessed so many people, with the best intentions, fall into horrible situations with their animals, simply because they didn't know any better. We need more channels like yours! God bless you and your homestead!

  2. I live in the city and I watch your videos for pure enjoyment so that being said, the next time I buy a gallon of milk for $2.69 and will say "Thank you God for someone doing this for me" How do you equate this cost of time and money per the milk you get? Is it just because you prefer raw milk? You do an amazing job Patara I hope you have a Blessed day.

  3. Really awesome video with LOTS to ponder. I dream of having a small herd of pedigree cattle, including a couple of heifers to milk, steers for meat and also breeding bulls for sale. This has given me a great deal to think about regarding costs. With no cattle experience, I'm going to start out slow – a couple of young heifer calves if I can find them – that should give me 18 months handling until I need to even think about insemination etc. Thanks!

  4. Well its a dream of mine but it just got smashed. No way I could handle it. I'll stick with a goat and chickens! But I cannot handle goat milk, eewww.
I will stay stocked up from a local dairy farmer. I have to see your vlog on canning milk! Another day… I've been on here now for hours. So glad I found your site. I've already learned so much!

  5. Ugh!! I hadn't thought of HALF of what was on your list!! DEFINITELY gonna look for a herd share instead!
Please do a work/cost analysis like this for each type of animal.
We are brand new to homesteading and I'm just gonna start with chickens and ducks for right now.
But I would really like to build slowly toward more self sufficiency.
    Slowly….
You guys are by far MY FAVORITE resource for always keeping it REAL!!!

  6. Holy cow!!! That was intense and extremely straightforward. Totally awesome. Thank you for being so honest and direct with the information. I'll be trying to find a herd share.

  7. People who work full time non farmish jobs and want their own food can still homestead and own cows, solar amd solar batteries sould be a great investment for fridge ect. Then basically its just water bill. Unless you have horse too. Most people choose grass fed cow.

  8. Patara you are the best. You are a fount of knowledge and willing to share with your fellow man. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless. Happy Easter to you and your family.

  9. You can adopt me, Patera! You take such good care of all the animals that come your way, I’m pretty sure I would be happy as a clam ( er, um, baby chick) under your wing. You know way more than I can absorb about farm life, but it’s still interesting. Thank you for taking a water break to explain dairy cow needs ( in brief).

  10. I was just thinking the other day, while watching a video with Miss Lovey and her calf, "I wonder what it costs to live that way?" Whew! Imma city gal with a country soul. I'll just come to visit, pet your animals, and go on home. Ha. x, E.
