My grandparents had 8 children on a small homestead of pigs, chickens and always had at least one milk cow. Mom says it was never that kind of financial burden for them. My grandparents raised their family during the Great Depression era and still didn't have the financial burden that comes with homesteading today. My theory on this issue is….. In grandmas day, human greed hadn't taken hold as it has today. Everyone wants to get rich quick now. This mindset has created the financial burden for the little guy who just wants to be self sufficient and do the best he can for his family and the environment. It doesn't have to be this hard. Greed is the culprit. With that being said….. I have to tell ya. Petara, I LOVE your videos! You are a wealth of information! Thanks so much for helping people understand the reality of homesteading today. I have witnessed so many people, with the best intentions, fall into horrible situations with their animals, simply because they didn't know any better. We need more channels like yours! God bless you and your homestead!
amd thats why we are in a herdshare. $8 for a gallon of raw milk seems like a good deal now! lol We will just stick with growing mushrooms
I grew up with dairy goats because my brother and mom couldn't handle cow milk. Goats were a lot cheaper
I live in the city and I watch your videos for pure enjoyment so that being said, the next time I buy a gallon of milk for $2.69 and will say "Thank you God for someone doing this for me" How do you equate this cost of time and money per the milk you get? Is it just because you prefer raw milk? You do an amazing job Patara I hope you have a Blessed day.
Hi Patara, I'm new at this. I just started a youtube. Your the 4th person that I love to watch. Your livestock/farming/homestead video really hit home. I always look forward to your next one. Mare
I so wish I could find someone but it's something we can't buy here 🙁 Great points P!
Really awesome video with LOTS to ponder. I dream of having a small herd of pedigree cattle, including a couple of heifers to milk, steers for meat and also breeding bulls for sale. This has given me a great deal to think about regarding costs. With no cattle experience, I'm going to start out slow – a couple of young heifer calves if I can find them – that should give me 18 months handling until I need to even think about insemination etc. Thanks!
Sooo . . . Is it economically viable to have a milk cow? You did not post your P&L.
Do you have a miniature milk cow?
so why does anyone have a cow? My goodness its not worth the milk alone
I've watched a lot of these types of videos. By far the most informative and interesting one I've watched. Thank you so much!! Really great helpful info
I love it! Thanks for all the good concise info–very thorough!
Blessings!
Well its a dream of mine but it just got smashed. No way I could handle it. I'll stick with a goat and chickens! But I cannot handle goat milk, eewww.
I will stay stocked up from a local dairy farmer. I have to see your vlog on canning milk! Another day… I've been on here now for hours. So glad I found your site. I've already learned so much!
So sad that cow milk is cheaper than water here in the UK so owning a cow just doesn't make economic sense.
Thanks for this info. We are working on making decisions on a cow, goats, and what we need to do to prepare for them.
My grandparents have always had cows. It never seemed to be this much money for them! Sad how everything has just gone up so much!
Amazing information and advice. Thank you Patera, you are awesome.
Ugh!! I hadn't thought of HALF of what was on your list!! DEFINITELY gonna look for a herd share instead!
Please do a work/cost analysis like this for each type of animal.
We are brand new to homesteading and I'm just gonna start with chickens and ducks for right now.
But I would really like to build slowly toward more self sufficiency.
Slowly….
You guys are by far MY FAVORITE resource for always keeping it REAL!!!
Holy cow!!! That was intense and extremely straightforward. Totally awesome. Thank you for being so honest and direct with the information. I'll be trying to find a herd share.
Thank you for sharing.
People who work full time non farmish jobs and want their own food can still homestead and own cows, solar amd solar batteries sould be a great investment for fridge ect. Then basically its just water bill. Unless you have horse too. Most people choose grass fed cow.
If you also like to cook there is a billion thinks to do with milk plus converting it
Patara you are the best. You are a fount of knowledge and willing to share with your fellow man. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless. Happy Easter to you and your family.
You can adopt me, Patera! You take such good care of all the animals that come your way, I’m pretty sure I would be happy as a clam ( er, um, baby chick) under your wing. You know way more than I can absorb about farm life, but it’s still interesting. Thank you for taking a water break to explain dairy cow needs ( in brief).
I was just thinking the other day, while watching a video with Miss Lovey and her calf, "I wonder what it costs to live that way?" Whew! Imma city gal with a country soul. I'll just come to visit, pet your animals, and go on home. Ha. x, E.
Shoot it to me straight. Love it. Thank you
I know I'm three years late, but what's best way to find a trusted herd share? Thanks!
Vegan? Vegan.
Edit: Might just keep some chickens. If they annoy me I'll eat them.
You can put in a couple of car ports for 5k… one for milking one for a run in.
Thought I wanted a cow. Nope.
