VIDEO: Permaculture principle about system supplying in own needs
In the beginning of starting a Permaculture system the end goal is to have the system supply it’s own needs, this is true, BUT in the beginning don’t let perma shaming stop you from bring in material to jump start your own system.
With out a doubt some of the best advice around.
great video! glad you're getting the rain! you know for my project I decided I'll make my food forest also a giant dove plot with diverse crops to build the soil up instead of plain ryegrass and clover. also that's going to add extra food as dove and other game birds.
Great video. I am converting 3/4 of an acre of turf grass in the suburbs into a permaculture system and i get questioned about why I import mulch and compost if permcaulture is so good at creating a self-sufficient system that does not need artificial fertilizers or pest management. People don't understand how degraded most land is and that artificial inputs are basically just life support not life.
I completely agree, there should be no carbon-shaming, or snobism ;o)
However …. if there is no car to transport the material … thing is, I just spend 7 weeks in a place where there was nothing, not even much dirt. One guy wanted to bring in 100 cubic yards of dirt. for 4 dollars a yard. There also was no 400$ for dirt, which had to be shoveled afterwards etc. Made me think about how many westerners (and me too) have a mindset of pro-active-ness, transport stuff from here to there, re-arrange stuff, always busy, looking for action to change stuff according to their mindset. What I mean is that another approach might be building/creating a growing-medium by cover-cropping in as a quickly succession as possible. That way you can build organic material/soil. It'll take a while, but in the end it'll be effortless if designed correct.
Still, if I'd have the money to spend on soil, resources etc, I probably will have a very hard time to stop myself from buying them.
Excellent counsel. "Perma-shaming". New term for me.
