Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Your videos and disposition make the cold New England winter bearable. Putting a "formal" raised bed in this spring; been sharing your information with my daughter. Thanks, lots of excitement for this coming year.

  2. Add some calcium chloride(pickle crisp) or oak/grape leaves or even some bay leaves which will add tannin to the brine and help keep your pickles crisp.

  3. Hi Mark I have been watching your videos for ages, thank you for all the helpful advice.I have a query about asparagus.I bought a 6 cell punnet from Turners nursery when they closed down.I have put the asparagus in a wicking bed. ( HALF IBC I follow Robs aquaponics up Ipswich way) have to say its going really well I know you don't pick it for a couple of years my question is do you trim it or just let it go berserk and then cut back in winter.I am in Brisbane in the Bayside suburbs.Any help or advice would be great.Happy gardening.

  4. If you can you should try the Cebu mango from the Philippines. I hear most of their trees have been whped out. I'd hate to see this beautiful honey sweet and intensely perfumed mango die out.

  5. I feel so lucky not to have those fruit fly problems, not sure I could take the time to fight those. I have my own issues especially gophers, birds and squirrels but they seem more manageable than those damn flys.

  6. I love all of your videos. I cant wait to start my raised beds gardens this year. I've got one ordered and am gonna order at least one more big one. Im so excited. Im gonna grow all kinds of news fruits and veggies!
