I love green beans to grow and to eat. They are the hardest on my back for some reason. I can be bent over working landscaping all day and not have a sore back compared to a couple hours of picking beans. They are a great seller at our farmers market.
I've never heard of transplanting beans. I like to grow beans to full maturity and save the dried beans for soups and seed. They last for years this way without any work.
We grow a round of early bush beans to get some beans into our CSA bags as early as possible. We grow Provider, because they germinate in cooler soil, though I think Jade is a better bean.
We have some good success with Fortex pole beans. There is an up front cost to install the trellis, but we get an 8-10 week harvest window. Our CSA business model gets greater benefit from a long steady harvest window than from higher yield over a shorter period.
Fortex yields quite high because the beans are a foot long. They have good flavor and are very attractive to restaurants. We get a decent price, too.
Do weather modification programs like the creation of man made clouds with aerosols in the stratosphere affect production? Less sun hurt your business?
After working at Tecolote Farm near Austin, I really like long beans. They have somewhat of a 'nutty flavor' that I found quite delectable.
I only like them restaurant size… you pick them to big for my taste. They get gritty and wirery verry fast ones they go over that restaurant size. Anyway, every animal has his preferences. 🙂
Can you share a video of some of your canned goods?
I love bush beans. They just give and give. I harvest mine three times per year.
Waiting for the day you head down to Texas for a workshop… our growing seasons are interrupted by scorching summers.
I luv yr work Curtis ^^
Will you do a video on how you pickle your beans?
You are basically marketing raw materials, like a third world country. You could greatly increase your income by offering finished products, in some cases. Whereas you use the green beans privately, you could easily turn them into a variety of vegetarian alternatives to such dishes as "turky dinners, meatloaf, chicken parmisan, basil bergers" , and the like, and freeze them for self or restaurants. it uses vast amounts of beans and tast wonderful, so good for you too. Ask about recipes if interested.,
So, you were listening to someone read to you in your earbuds AND you were talking to the video camera at the same time? You ROCK!
That's an awesome shirt! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
How do you prepare the soil to get the beans to yield like that? I have grown Jade quite a while and have never gotten that kind of yield. I have always had to grow them cut and come again. 🙁
I grow Derby bush beans. The hardiest and most productive of any variety I've grown.
Try the Jesus diet ! Eat only at high noon and after sunset. don´t eat on sunday. Eat mostly raw and stay away from animal products. 😉 Love the results!!! <3 You can do it, too.
90% of my bush beans died off, and my Pole Beans went crazy, off of 2 plants i bet i had 300-450 beans all summer long, kinda trippy
Very true Curtis habits do needed to be followed in succession it is the single most difficult trait to nail down. The body is naturally lazy unless you create good habits. And the analogy to the farm is why I truly think if I can work in dirt all day and sell good quality food I grew, my life will be amazing even through the struggle. Unfortunately I don't think I'd grow beans either seems like a harder sale. Thx for the video.
You going to grow cannabis next year?
Same here… love to eat em hate to pick em…. any special pest control methods for your beans? I notice they're usually the first thing to get ate up by bugs here.
We blanch and vacuum seal ours for fresh beans in winter
Don't you love audible!? One of the most recent books I've started (after listening to yours) is "The Dirt cure: Growing healthy kids straight from the soil" by Maya Shetreat Klien MD. You should definitely give it a listen since you have a little one now! It will line up with your goals and mindset as a farmer. Let me know what you think!

Katamala olives roughly chopped, beans blanched, lemon juice & crime fraiche for a dressing. And a bunch of fresh chopped dill. Toss it all in a bowl. That's a bangin salad
In africa they eat bean plant leaves! You can cook them just like spinach
Curtis ,what type of nutrition do you give to your plant?
GREAT BOOK BY THE WAY ….
Keep up the good work
Tasty leaves, too
