Knowing how to prune raspberries is vitally important to getting a good harvest. There are a few different types of raspberries, which require various pruning methods. Today I break the raspberries into three different categories and go over my methods of pruning and maintaining them. Raspberries are a must have when gardening, they provide delicious consistent harvests with little work.

Excellent! Thank you.
I have a large raspberry patch which I need to prune , we have snow now and the plants have froze for our zone 3 winter , can I still prune my raspberries this late
So i was pruning some raspberries today before seeing this video. I chopped up the dead dry canes like woodchips and spread them around the base again chop n drop style. Can that promote disease or should it be ok?
I have a raspberry plant I got this past spring that was bare root. I put it in a container and let it go, it wound up running about 15-20 feet across the yard and now sort of up my wall. Would I prune this similar to the black raspberries? The name escapes me but when I let the berries go they did go dark/black. Thank you for the video!
how do you prune raspberries without getting all bloody? lol
Do you grow figs?
Thanks I have raspbery just a couple years, and several new plants popped up this year. I needed to know this. I wish you gave more thorough detail
Thanks for the tips, our new property has a ton of natural growing blackberries so this will be very helpful come next growing season. ~Stephanie
The food forest is doing good.
Great info!
Do you ever propagate your berry cuttings? That would be another great how to video.
Thought I seen in another vid you left cut raspberry canes on ground. Best to get them off the property all together to avoid diseases, which black raspberries are more prone to getting. Nice place, what's that in size, about a 1/3 acre food forest?
I really need help with my everbearings. I live on the west coast and have everbearings. They produce fruit about mid July no matter how I thin which is good – but the fall crop always rots on the canes since it is too wet and shaded (sun too low) by late August on. Can you advise the proper way to prune for a more bountiful spring harvest? thanks for your help!
I never prune berries without gloves. I can't stand the thorns! I usually prune in early spring. Do you recommend doing it in late fall instead?
Awesome stuff James, thanks for posting! Not sure if you saw but on a previous video of yours, I asked you for some advice on identifying my raspberries. I posted some pictures here – https://drive.google.com/open?id=1C-qqJVn8IN8hEzeB2DAhnsOso2Nm6idY Can you tell from looking at them whether or not I should prune these all the way back to the ground (i.e. they are fall bearing)? Much appreciated or if anyone else can answer too! I have a video of the raspberries in the springtime too if that helps – https://youtu.be/vumIeyErfr0
Just moved in my place (2 acres) and only just learning. Watching tons of videos and planning. I do have berries, all over. Summer Raspberries, fall Raspberries, and blackberries. (I wonder if I remember which is which.) Its January now. Is there anything I can do for them this coming year or is it too late. As for the planning the rest of a garden I have a very small budget. I think I am going spend the summer building compost and building up my soil. I have nice border trees but wild undergrowth. I love wild things but would love to put in functional hedges. Then I want to knock the weed layer down to the ground and compost and mulch for a good year. That way I can save up for some fruit trees and all the veggie seed I want to grow. Looking into leads for free woodchips, and I really want organic hay that I can let sit for a season so sprout and rot a bit. Anyway, I love your channel and have watched lots of the videos and learning so much. Getting confident!
Hi again, great video! With our ever-bearing raspberries we get fruit on new wood in late summer and again in the early summer of next year. The stakes then simply dry up and can be removed any time. We're based in Ireland, a maritime climate. Hope this helps! 😀
I got felco#6 pruners. Too
Dude your channel is amazing! Thank you for this precious content and quality videos

SP, FOR BLACK RASBERRIES, DO I PRUNE AT THE BEGINNING OF SUMMER OR AT THE END OF SUMMER? AND FOR EVERBEARING RASBERIES, DO I PRUNE AT THE BEGINING OF SPRING OR LATE SUMMER AND AGAIN AT THE EN OF SUMMER? THANKS
hey bud thanx for great video. I have Willamette Raspberries and I live in Jacksonville FL. I was away from home for a month and just got back and noticed my raspberries are about 10' long on trellises. I've only planted them in March this year. Should I prune the tops off ?? can anyone help ? or should I leave them to grow more ? I also have more new growth on bottom of plant. Thank You
Low energy here!!
1:56 Don't remove spent floricanes until after Spring of the next year, because they redistribute their sugars back to the plant then (read or saw this in a University publication).
