VIDEO: Fruit Trees Crushed by HUGE Ornamental Fig – Love Chair & Scooter Survives!

On the back of my previous video about Ornamentals for the Food Gardener https://youtu.be/lFUAmXD5ons it’s kind of ironic that I make this one next due to an ornamental tree dropping a huge branch and crashing down flattening several of our beloved fruit trees 🙁

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. I hope you are not sour tasting Mark, I am afraid I don’t know any cannibals who may help you find out! A lot of trees just break because they are drought stressed or even wet stressed, but I think the branch just got too heavy and growing out at an angle. I guess I would be hopping mad to have good trees spoilt. When our trees come down they usually find a new fence to break.

  2. Hi Mark, G'day! I feel your pain, we had an oak fall basically for same reason, except the fall was 75ft long..missed the bench though. My husband did clean up, and split wood for winter use, all in a weekend. Mulched the crown and left the acorns for the wild life to munch..all good and didn't have to purchase firewood! Be blessed!

  3. Happy Friday the 13th.. WoW…Major Huglecultue..wood chips ..Mulch.. love the intro Mark. I had a double truck ancient Oak go down in the spring solstice ..two trucks no less than 60 feet each..fell in opposite directions..guess how much made it to the gree waste? Absolutely zero..hugleculures in mass, great for growing and landscape design.
Glad you are safe and well.

  4. Well, this is becoming an annual event for you! Wasn't it just a year ago that this happened on the other side of your driveway? Stay safe cutting it up.

  5. dang! sorry about the tree limb falling but glad it didn't fall on you or anyone. You may need to cut back some more of the tree as some limbs look low hanging as was this one. Good luck with the cleanup and be careful! Glad Scooter is doing better too!

  6. Be worth hiring a decent sized wood chipper and a chainsaw in order to cycle that ginormous branch into your mulch pile… Most trees bent and not broken will be fine, a little trim and some staking might be needed but things generally come back from what you or I might not. Best of luck with it and enjoy your new mulch supply – don't give up on the fruit trees, Life can be pretty determined you know.

  7. How many battlegrounds have Bay in their name? Just missed the loveseat THIS TIME, Lolz. Honestly, every time a branch breaks off that tree it's like armageddon. The centre of that tree is completely rotten, it's time to round up the boys and finnish it off before it finishes you
