VIDEO: Where Should You Place Your Net Pots in a Deep Water Culture System?

I’ve gotten this question so many times that it’s about time I answer it on the channel! When growing in a Deep Water Culture (DWC) system, many people write in and ask, “Where should the bottom of my net pots be in relation to the nutrient reservoir?”

It’s a good question, and the answer is pretty simple…so watch and find out!

  1. I'm mostly interested in hydroponics. I just love the life of plants, seeds to produce!! Also interested in companion gardening even in hydroponics. Love watching your informative videos.

  2. I imagina a piece of string from the rockwool down to the reservoir as an actual wick might work as well if you want to just set a kratky and not keep track of the moisture levels.

  3. When changing nutrients on a DWC setup, do you refill the container back to the top of the net cup or back to the level it was at before changing the nutrients? Plants have roots

  4. my leaves are droopy and i couldnt figure out if i was overwatering or underwatering, i placed them right where you showed. I tried letting them dry out and also tried cranking that airstone all the way up. very slow growth for a week, still on first set of leaves out of seed…should i add nutes yet or hold off. i think i moved them to the dwc system to soon out of the germination pod, i saw a tiny root like yours and said! and moved over to clay and netipot. from netipot to water level it was a good 3 inches (eventually made it down there) (is that why its growing slow, or lack of nutes)

  5. is it possible to have TO MANY bubbles which would cause overwatering with this correct placement? Would we want to lower the water level some if lots of bubbles?

  6. Moving into my first house soon, and I've recently subscribed, love you videos, I am a plant lover by heart but an IT engineer as my day job. I am binging all your videos, from suncalc.org helping me understand best sunshine spots to grow, to the easy mistakes first time growers have.

    Love from South Africa!

  7. what if all i have are leca balls and my roots are not showing at the bottom of the mesh pot yet? also, what if it's a plant that has matured in leca but now i have to repot (again, in leca)?

  8. Like the video because it solves a practical problem. My current system uses overhead drip to get the roots growing, then once the roots are out of the net pot, I put water line just above the bottom of the net pot, start the water stones, then I keep overhead drip irrigation pretty much forever to replenish the water.

  9. I created a RDWC. But the water level is too high. Can I put clay stones under the Rockwood to create a space between the water and the bottom of the Rockwood? I am having tonns of problems…we are going through a heat wave as well….Thanks for the video!

  10. I honestly love this video and your channel! I have a quick question though if that’s cool? Should you ever leave an air pocket between the water level and the net pot in a recirculating system, and if so how much space should there be? In my system, there are multiple air stones running. However, my water levels are touching the bottom of the net pots, and I feel like I am drowning the roots or potentially going to harm the plants somehow. What should I do in your opinion with the water levels?

  11. Thanks for clearing that up for me ,I'm starting my first dwc very soon,I also like your light for seedlings/cuttings just wondering ware I can get one,,

  12. Hi! Im really glad I found you….im new to hydroponics…trying the Kratky canning jar method for herbs, greens and hopefully small cukes strawberries too..My jars are covered with paper, I have 6 jars planted…the seeds have popped but immediately became leggy… My question is without needing a degree in math or purchasing measuring instruments..what is an EZ way to determine how long to leave the grow lite on an how close should it be to the plant? I have a 12×12 in led (red/blue) combo led light…thanks so much for answering your peeps posts…no one around here is into hydroponics…so having to rely on youtube for my info. (don't use F-book)
