  1. For some reason I thought your husband was in the military?. Are you not covered under his pan? I know most of my friends are- maybe I was wrong about Him being in active duty – just saying

  2. The medical bills can be killers. Just when you think you have them all from a short hospital stay another one comes in from another service you didn’t even realize was involved. Not a fun surprise.

  3. We have taxes in the city here in Canada our property taxes are probably more than yours per square foot or acre or whatever so moving to the country we would probably pay as much in taxes but have more land to go with it what my husband does with our taxes is that he sets up as equal payments so every month we pay a couple hundred dollars just like a regular bill

  4. It's good to know homesteaders (and all of us) can count on you to talk about the "hard" things……..being responsible with your finances, the importance of saving. Thanks for another worthwhile video, Miss P!

  5. Good advice. We had TWO unplanned surgeries last year and an er visit for stitches. Medical expenses were enough to make an itemized return worth doing over standard deduction. Health care is in crisis in this country. If we had to rely so let on what we produce on the farm so far we'd be in real trouble, even as careful as we are eith our money.

  6. Amen! I learned the hard way you can't always treat everything with nuts and berries (but I still try. 😀 ). Hope you're soaking that leg in a tub with epsom salt. Really is amazing stuff.
With no notice, our property taxes went up again, and ours are due Dec 5……right before the holidays! So grateful I struggled when I was younger and learned the lessons you're talking about early in life. Squirreling money and food away has saved us more times then I can count……. this time included. Unfortunately, like you, we'll have to wait for our new tractor too, but that's ok. We're used to finding creative ways to get things done. 😉

  7. Patara and friends,  a good ole' boy from Tennessee named Dave Ramsey has a good program called Financial Peace.  One of the things this (now thankfully retired) accountant learned was, accidents sneak up on you (aka Emergency Fund – it needs to be bigger than you think) but taxes don't.  Neither does Christmas, your anniversary, or kids needing clothes at each new school year.  Average it out for the year, (yes, write it down whenever you spend money!), divide that figure by how many paychecks you get, and stick that money in a "sock account"  and never, never, EVER fail to put that amount into that account.

  8. You're doing a good job of addressing these issues, Patara!  Having moved onto a 9+ acres and having 7 of them reading and waiting for me to develop them, I know each of us has to consider carefully every penny spent (or not).

  9. I LOVE the way you "Bring It" when it comes to the Realities of just, Life, never mind Homesteading. You have a beautiful place that you've built from the ground up and each year you add or improve something ONLY if you CAN!! Too many people fall victim to the "I want it NOW" & with Credit, you can HAVE it now. Problem is they forget about repayments for possibly years & years or the fact that interest rates go up! You have your feet firmly on the ground and remind us that it's the only sensible way to live! Thank you Patara.

  10. And this isn’t just for hardcore homesteaders, it can happen in the city just as easily! I wish you the best of luck with all your situations- I hope everything works out for you.

  11. it's a great idea, I started putting all my spare cash each week many years ago into a money box and a year and a half later our washing machine died. we had no spare money so I opened the money box and counted it out. I had save $6,000 dollars more than enough to buy a good washing machine , what a relief. Ever since I have kept a money box even if it's only our Australian gold coins ($2 and $1). Last year this paid for a one week holiday for me and my husband

  12. Love those grannies!! Especially those grannies that experienced the Great Depression. My grandmother could feed a large family and Pennies, she could still squeeze in vacations, and all the necessities. No one ever felt deprived. I am blessed to have learned from her. Man I sure miss her.

  13. Great lesson. Fifty something years ago. I graduated high school and seven days later I was on the bus headed for induction. At our advanced training we had an 'old' retired guy performing some of the class room training. His job was to train us on skills for staying alive after we completed advanced training and were shipped off to that tropical paradise half a world (and life) away. One day he just stopped and said something to the effect – 'you will learn a lot of things here, but if there is just one thing you learn today remember this .. every time you get paid – pay yourself first. $1, $5, $10, anything – pay yourself first.' He was just as right then as you are today. Your lesson this day will be relevant and important 100 years from now, as it was that hot summer day 50 years ago. Thank you.

  14. I'm watching this video a bit later than you taped it. But any info that's makes everyone aware of what can happen in life is valuable. We're not homesteaders but try to use common sense when living life. Be prepared is all you can do. Doing nothing will get you in trouble. Thanks for your common sense advice.

  15. Doctors and hospitals can put you on a payment plan. Find it very hard to accept I am slowing down. Happens so slowly, I have to remind myself. that I have to slow down . . .
