This is a fun one for you all. If you use a LOT of hydroponic basil in the kitchen like I do, using the method I outline in this video is an easy way to harvest basil forever and ever off of ONE initial mother plant!
The method is known as the Kratky method of hydroponics, where you use NO electrical parts, no pumps, no airstones. All you do is place a rooted cutting or seedling into a reservoir and let it drink down the water and use up nutrients. When there’s no water left, you simply harvest the remaining leaves on a plant and move on to the next one!
You can also try growing basil in a deep water culture system using an airstone if you want.
If you want to create an endless basil supple, all you need to do is stagger your cuttings so you have:
– 1 basil plant rooting
– 1 basil plant in mild growth
– 1 basil plant in aggressive vegetative growth
– 1 basil plant at the end of it’s life cycle
As long as you keep ~4 plants going at a time in different stages of the growth cycle, you’ll NEVER run out of basil.

Good video! Speeding up the handling sequences is time saving for the viewer! My question is what pH and EC you use for Basil? Jeb uses 7,8 pH in his Youtube video. Also if you fill more water – is it smart to use condensed water at that?
Thanks for perfect video, i am about to start this method, but i don't understand which nutrients and how i should use them. I just found advanced nutrients which is available in my country but on their website they say 2ml first week, 4ml second week 8ml third week.. But i don't understand how i should use this with kratky method. If i am not going to put another nutrients whats the meaning of first week second week etc.. I mean can you recommend me a system about usage of nutrition in kratky method. Nutrients i am looking for this :

Great video, basil needs tomatoes….
Hi Kev, enjoy your knowledge and presentation, subscribed from NSW Australia
Isn't that too much trouble??? I heard you can just put the stem into a cup of water and in 2 weeks you'll get roots. You don't need all that jar/rocks/etc.
Can this be done from seed
Hello thank you for your information, new sub her. you answered all my questions except 2, when should I add more water to the mason jar? And when I do should I add plain water or water with nutrients?
5:55 it's called a heading cut. Thanks for the info on the video, this is actually exactly what I was looking for with my purple opal basil plant and tons of extra salsa jars. I've painted most of my jars black instead of worrying about wrapping, a strip of thin pin-striping tape from an auto store or thin painters tape will give you enough room to look in at the water level and at the condition of the roots.
Question. Does cloning vs from seed affect the flavor potency or sweetness? How about cloning from a plant thats already bolted?
Ive seen where you can use something like kitchen roll wet, put a seed in and then put it in the basket with the clay pebbles
not gonna lie that intro sync was legit
What light did you use?
I have young herbs (basil, chives, chamomile, lemongrass) that I bought last week and planted in too small of a container w/little drainage. I'd like to convert them into hydroponics. In this case I wouldn't need the rock wool and just carefully clean the roots and shove them into the net pot…is that right? Thanks.
That jug is genius for pouring the solution,I've been using a 5 gallon bucket and its a 2 hand messy and hard to carry choice.
could it be used in wick system like 4×4 netpot holes? (just wanna save some space in urban areas)
What nutrients and what proportions per jar? Thanks!
How big or tall can a basil grow in this system?
With the LED lighting, how long to you leave it on for every day, and what is the light level at at the basil (lux? or how many watts, how close do you bring the light to the leaves?)
Hello. Can I put the rockwool with my seed under the light ? If I want to germinate ? Regards
Nice vdo. I would like to know about the pH and EC of the water with nutrients. What nutrients do you use. Can you tell in detail about the grow lights and if a humidifier is necessary?
Is there a reason commercial farmers don’t use the kratky method all the way through growing? Just seems super simple and efficient vs using pumps etc…surely there’s a reason?!
Hello – Can you please explain how you use the General Hydroponics solutions? The Amazon link shows a set of three and I want to ensure I’m using it correctly for this method. Thank you!
I swear everytime i have some question about a plant you ALWAYS have an answer! I'm off to propagate my neglected basil plant and get it into leca
Which light are you using towards the end of this video? Thanks!
Pretty sure you'd be better off using opaque jars because I think light on the roots can have a negative impact on growth. Maybe you could try painting or duct taping half of the jars to see how they compare.
nice intro! 🙂
I love basil
