  1. We got our first snow here in the PNW this week too. It got down in the 20s last night. brr. I still have some lettuce under plastic. I need to do an inspection tomorrow and see if it's still alive.

  2. We had a frost 3 weeks earlier then usual. The low tunnels saved it all. We just have low tunnels and they did great. Thank the Lord, we rarely get snow, but we do get some cold! May purchase a Cat Tunnel next year, just seeing what we can do now and see if it will be cost effective….

  3. This happens in Alberta ALL THE TIME. We can be summer one week, zip into a hard -20C winter for a few days and be back up to 10-15C temps for a few days.

I'd never try extending the season without a cover of some sort.

  4. I have been rushing to purchase poly low tunnels for the first frost that we are going to get here this Friday. I should have everything except the bed of spinach covered. I will not be able to get a tunnel for that one before Friday. I think it will make it, but my lettuce and radishes and turnips are getting covered by tomorrow. Friday and Saturday the temp is going to drop to -6 Celsius.

  5. We've had the same early cold snap in the Twin Cities. Been lows below freezing every night since the third week of OCT. Didn't even get above freezing today. So much for turning new plots over. I'm glad to see your crops are holding in there. The sun seems to be helping.

  6. Farmers Almanac gave us the heads up. The Americas had a Nino to Nina change, due to a drop in sun activity. Mt sunflower microgreens did ok but laid over. Everything else did ok.

Wel also do propane heating for valley hits like this. DIY solution. 😛

Snow is an insulator of course.

  7. Molasses is antifreeze for plants. The complex carbs and minerals lower the freezing point in the cells. I've grow lettuce in unheated high tunnels (low tunnel inside the high tunnel) down to -13F in Chicago.
