Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. That sure was a mighty storm that went by. I live in Gympie and we had it come clean over the top of us. Hope you didn't get too wet or any damage…especially that the lightning missed you…keep 'em coming…I learn more each time.

  2. My dad puts LED lights every 4 post of Dragon fruit. The reason is they like moonlight or night light and well elevated areas. He harvested some fruits even off season because of that. Cheers from the Philippines

  3. I have a poster that I have shared numerous times: “There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments.”
-Janet Kilburn Phillips May be the most important mantra I have ever come a cross. Love your blog, Mark. keep it up.

  4. Oh so true Mark been a box gardener for 3 year now haven't had much success but i enjoy eating what I have grown myself and your also so right in the fact that gardening is a learning curve that sometimes thing's don't go the way you thought they would Thank You for the efforts that you share on your channel

  5. Mark, That DragonFruit looks amazingly yummy. I'd never seen it before. We don't have it available in the stores near me. Nice encouraging video. I'm so glad you didn' t take a chance on "getting fried" lol. Cheers.

  6. Great video, Mark. I will be planting a avocado tree in a raised bed soon. For a 3 foot tree, what size container should I plant it to (height and width. I have to use a container due to severe heavy rains. Could you suggest the planting media that I should use? Thank you in advance.

  7. Thank you for the encouragement, Mark! I love growing edibles in pots because I have a limited space. The thing about growing in pots is that I can transfer them in a safe place whenever there is a typhoon since my country is prone to it. Please keep sharing informative gardening tips. Greetings from the Philippines! 🙂

  8. this was a good pick me up video, I'm a first year gardener ( prob can't even call myself one yet) and I was bummed out as I've been trying to germinate mangos and I had two seedlings sprouted that died and it's backup seed (3 sprouts polyembryonic) rotted after I potted it, but I have so many projects and most of them are alright so I'll just have to keep trying on mangos

  9. Hello Mark, ¿how are you?
    I appreciate your channel.
I want to ask you about hurricanes/typhoons and the gardens, orchards, and especially raised plant beds. How do you secure/anchor them? Have you already done a vid on the topic?
    ¡Gracias! I appreciate you!

  10. I firmly believe this is one of your best videos. Your honesty in talking about failures in the garden is so important. I also do the same when posting about my vegie patch. Love your enthusiasm and passion.
