In this video, I show how I build up my quail breeding stock and give an update on how my new Borotto incubator worked. At the same time, I refurbish our quail brooder and explain some features/improvements.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂
MARK WE CALL THAT THE BWING EFECT, OLD ONE LEGGED JOSEPH T RETIRED NAVY
I want to try this so bad! Thank you for the videos, Mark!
Would you recommend quails or chickens, if I was only going to get them for eggs? I know I wouldn't be able to kill them for meat.
I remember in a previous vid that you did, I think you caught an adult quail as it tried to fly past you. It was an instant reaction from yourself and looked bloody amazing when you caught it mid air. Sign yourself up to the Australian cricket team mate 🙂 The incubator seems to work fine to me. Cheers Adam
Hi Mark,,,when I came back in here I noticed that YouTube had unsubbed me. That's the second channel I noticed that. Anyway, I re subbed as I really like your vids.
Also, your an Aussie,,,and it's easy to relate to your style and what your doing.
Karin and I are considering possibly gettin some Quails as we don't have the space for chooks.
Great catch on that little one!
All the best to you and your family
Marty & Karin
Just discovered you. Great stuff! Will be watching.
how long can hold eggs before incubating?
Hi Mark,do you know anyone who breeds & sells Australian Stubble Quail? Love your videos, James.
Nice! Bought a Borotto Lumia 8 this year since everyone here in Italy says they are very good, I'll see how it does with 32 shipped eggs, hopefully I get a 30-50% hatch rate
i just got my first egg from my quail!
I have a question, it's not about your quail but your symbol. Your Aussie, I'm guessing, my question is why don't you have the globe in the eye show Australia instead of North America, Central America and South America?
Mark, Mark, Mark! There have been a few videos, out of the last few, where you don’t give us a big smile. I SOOOO look forward to your smiles and I’m SOOOO disappointed when you don’t give us one. That’s my favorite part! We love Self Sufficient Me and we love your smiles! So…
you should get commission from borotto, i got a lumia 8 after watching your videos.
He's not that lucky.. you're gona eat him later lol im still searching for your video about if the mums can hatch their own eggs? like chooks lol
Nice video. Do you have videos of how the solar panels installation
I put 40eggs in incubator day18and only one came out why
Mark we decided to start incubating Quails based on your inspirational videos, we even started making our own video documentation – let's get into it!!!! 🙂
Honestly I won't be able to eat these little babies, I know it is hypocrisy but still
Don't mind the eggs.
They are really cute
Can you please make more poultry videos Mark? Have you tried pheasants? Geese? Turkeys?
It is hatching day for my quail.soi have two, but it has been 37.5 C in the incubator but 39 in the room… Can you hatch some when you had a really hot time so I am hopeful a few more might make it
Hi Mark. Would you recommend the Lumia8 in the end ? I had a terrible outcome with a Chinese one. Need to get something else. This looks good?
Thank you for putting a smile on our faces. Hello from Maryland, USA
Fun to watch!
THANKS FOR THE VID, LOVE THE INCUBATOR STUFF, AND BIRD HANDLING. ALSO WAS NEAT TO SEE YOUR OVERHEAD CAT CAGE. THANKS AGAIN. YOUR TIPS ARE WELL TAKEN!
Hi mark love self sufficient me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEwIt6h6f-Y Hi mark i thought you may like this hack using used sponges. I will try this hack myself
Hey Mark, thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I have a question…. I started an incubation just after Christmas and now it is hatch/lockdown time but we are having a heat wave. I can maintain humidity but not temp. The machine says it's 37.2 giver or take but I have a little one inside the incubator that hits 39 in the hottest part of the day. I feel this will ruin the hatch. What is your opinion.
Cheers Rach
