Why would someone think the onion sets might be too deep? I want to plant onion sets this year and I am inexperienced with onions.

Mark any fertilizer inputs other than leaf mold?
I have a rope I put knots every foot. I use that to plant. Easy to plant 6 , 12 or 24 inches. depending on what I need. Planted my onions today too.

Are you worried about the rain run off on the onions? Thanks for the update Mark..!!
Have you tried growing from seed? I put a few (4or5or6) seeds into each module in February and plant them out pretty much as you do your sets. Advantages are you plant out about 5 times faster, the yield is still great, there’s a bigger choice of varieties from seed here in UK and there is no chance of importing any onion disease.
Of course there’s extra work in raising seeds but with a 40 cell standard sized tray yielding potentially 200 onions, it’s not much effort at the time of year when you can’t do much else.
And it’s a lot cheaper!
