also in the Top is usally more air and less standing water , tomatoes usally prefore it a bit drier, but why so soft with the roots, i have best result when i trim the Roots forcing to grow in his new soil preventing circular roots
Growing three different types this year. Siletz for an early crop, grape tomatoes and big mommas for salsa. Never been a sauce guy. Starting from seed this year and they're popping up now.

Still too shallow on the root ball. Better to dig a deeper vertical hole for the root ball. Remember that tomato roots can go deep- three to five feet. That’s what helps with transpiration during hot stressful times.
I see that black peppercorns is it natural antifungal and bacteria killer does it kill off the good bacteria in your soil or only the bad Google says it's good to put in your soil your thoughts

If you don't distrupt the roots, when you transplant makes no difference.
