This is the first time I noticed you have 2 dogs, double the cuteness.
I learned to garden since I was a child. I love anything that grows. Unfortunately when I married my husband (35years ago)and moved to his property it has been a death sentence for every plant I put down or try to grow.
We have no top soil and the ground is so hard it takes a pick axe to penetrate with minutes dust flying as you hack into it.
No water penetrates. Even when I try to water everything immediately flows off and downhill towards our part time creek. Typically now, I just dream of growing things and get no where with production.
If I try to plant directly in the ground things, everything has died except 1 area of Turks cap. The very few other items I have growing take an enlarged hole, complete remix of soils, compost, and mulches and I only get lucky once in a blue moon. I work hours just to attempt to plant 1 4" item.
I am at a loss and have no idea what else to do.

Yes, triple ground wood chips are great, but even better (more available nutrition) is fine ground leaves. Many people consider leaves a nuisance, burn them, polluting the air and destroying the best mulch. Grass clippings are put in the garbage can as waste. What ignorance! It's a shame the public schools don't really educate, instead focus on brain-washing the young mind to be an obedient servant of the state, dependent.
