VIDEO: Direct Sowing vs Sowing in Modules (The Pros and Cons of both Options)

I LOVE sowing seeds! It is such a fun and exciting thing to do because for me, it usually means I know that whatever I am sowing will turn into something delicious! But there are two primary types of sowing; direct and in modules. In this video I talk about the differences and their benefits and drawbacks. But both play a huge role in our garden. There is so much to cover for this but one thing I forgot to mention is that growing root vegetables in modules is a tricky process for success!

  1. I love your videos. Back to basics….and when my kids finally do get interested I'll point them in your direction. (But…..the constant loop of that music is too loud and too distracting….I'd rather hear the birds and the wind in the trees!) Marty.

  2. I thought your videos were quite engaging before! But I do love all the b-roll footage you added here, it really does add something. Anyway, I agree with you on module sowing being the preference! I like starting them early as well, and since I’m not the best weeder it helps me to know where my plants are if I can transplant them as opposed to always direct sowing.

  3. You're smashing it with the production lately, Huw, it's obvious you're putting a lot of work in. Ignore the people whinging about the music, there's nothing wrong with trying to grow your channel by giving your videos a soundtrack

  4. Thank you for your inspiration. I love gardening. Share I live he won't allow it. I live in San Diego whare rents are high. I'm looking for a solution. Cuz life is to valuable to deny LIVING.

  5. Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada! Without indoor module seed planting here many plants we almost take for granted would be lost to frost. A lot of time is spent adjusting to any particular spring's weather. Mother nature has no problem teaching hard lessons.
My conclusion has been not to be in a hurry and watch closely days to maturity.

  6. Huw your videos are absolutely the best…I've learnt sooo much from you, theres so much information and its put across so concisely and clearly. I cant wait to by your book…
    Thanks for what you do!!

  7. Nice one mate. Love it. Im no guru gardener but I find myself sowing in trays more often than not too. Seems to give me good control and better chance of sucess. Thanks a heap Huw!

  8. I just love your videos but the background music on this really surprised me and it’s distracting and I’m having trouble paying attention to your words. The calmer videos are so much more interesting and I feel like I can truly dig in to the lessons you teach.

  9. Here in 2021, JANUARY…getting antsy to plant. Your videos help me feel less anxious about sowing and provide enormous amounts of satisfaction while waiting for March (I started in Feb. last year…too soon!) Thank you Huw!

  10. I start lots of starts like flowets and herbs and cover them with the clear water catchers for under plants they make great little mini green houses. Then plant them out. Its saves space for starting sucession crops in summer too and keeps them more moist
