so what was the intended purpose of the black "cloth" per the manufacturer? was it to line your green house shelves? I'm not remembering hearing you say. Thanks for the info – good to see successes and fails. Keep up the good work.

Using a solid under tray with a drip irrigation system might work. Varying the hose sizes or number of spigots for those requiring more water linked with an auto timer. Do the product trays have to touch the water or will it draw the moisture up? Eg. solid tray with 3/8" riser for the product tray to rest on and then drip irrigate water into the solid tray up to 1/4 or 5/16". With that kind of method, I would organize the product by water volume requirement for better efficiency. Experiment with a couple of trays for each variety and see where it goes and you may just find an alternative. Just a thought.

Hey Curtis, ive been following you for a little over a year and im trying to start my own market garden, i had trouble with my soil the first year but i know i can grow space spinach and a spring mix blend well, i need to setup my post harvest and that is taking some money and time. Id like to do micro greens at some point, i dont know if i like the bottom watering method. Im wondering if you have ever tried overhead misting water lines?
I'm using the capillary mats from farmtek this season with soil blocks. I haven't got any disease problems yet but I've been surprised. I want to bleach them soon to sanitize them. You have to have the right kind of flats for contact with the blocks.
I had a similar issue and ended up using a giant shallow sealed tray that I sat pots on,I used a flood and drain tecnique…If you wanted water to sit longer with some plants,the pump was on a timer,and you just set it a bit longer.It automatically drained,or you could use a valve to time the water..was very flexible.A simple programable timer can have multiple settings for multiple trays
Just curious, did you ever try to clean or sterilize the mat or the fabric inside? I think it might have been a bit of work, but I am betting it could have helped the situation? Maybe rotate off and allow it to dry out a bit?

This seems interesting to me. I only water my microgreens twice before harvest (once at planting & once on day 4) with no issues with germination and no rot. Since I harvest twice a week, I water on harvest/plant days only. I am in zone 6b in the US Ozarks and my microgreens are in drain flats and a micro-green house stand inside my green house (DIY commercial shelf system wrapped in plastic). I got the idea from seeing caterpillar tunnels in hoop houses and realized I needed to control the microgreens environment differently than my seedling starts. Hope this helps someone.
Looking forward to your bottom watering solution for the paperpot trays. I bought some and was disappointed to find there were no matching bottom trays to an otherwise great/sturdy product.
I have been looking for a bottom watering solution for your paperpot trays for so long. most of the gardening products don't work with the dimensions of the paperpot trays and if they do it leaves a lot of unused space.

these trays would fit a single paperpot and are 3/4" longer than the tray so that you wouldn't have to lift the tray to fill; just pour right in. Perhaps a custom designed tray that fit 4-8 trays side by side with that extra 3/4" of length could be designed and implemented
Cool idea! I run a very basic DIY flood tray ebb and flow system. I do about 120 trays of micros on them per week. I can also throw my field starts on the flood trays once they’ve germinated. This allows us to take the weekends off. Let me know if you want more info on the system!

Hey Curtis, well I have to tell ya, you really inspired my wife, and I. We tried two large garden beds.. did good for part time. We have watched your videos for a few years now. We just got our order in to Farmers friend, and got two caterpillar tunnels, and a bunch of the other basics. We love it man. I am a mentally disabled vet, married to a wonderful wife. Ever since she showed me your vids, I was hooked. When we get it running good, we will send you an invite to Central Point Oregon. Still coming up with a name. I bottom water our 400 flats daily. Holes flat in a not holed flat. Adjust the amount to the weight of the flat – you can actually learn to gauge very well. 45 min / day. No mold, no diseases, no problems.
We use a hole less grow bag tray it fits around 3/4 flats and holds just under 6ltr of water enough of a gap on the side to pour water in easily.
I had been looking at making a metal bench well to sit flat's in and this then fills with water from a tap.
I bought a similar product for bottom watering my seedlings this spring and also have lots of fungus problems this year in the veggie garden. Clearing up now that the heat is on but lower yields for sure. Thanks for an honest review.
What I heard is that you need smaller flood tables so you can divide up your different varieties and flood them at different amounts. Let me know what you come up with or think about that idea.
