Love this video! I want to use woodchips, and there are a lot of videos showing gardeners using woodchips. I know you shouldn’t till them into your soil, but this is the first video I’ve seen teaching how to rake the mulch back and then plant! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!!
Thanks! What do you do about the plants that aren't exactly perennials, but they reseed themselves, like summer savoury? It's so nice when they just show up in various gardens, and I don't need to buy them from the garden centre. Would that work the same way in wood chips?
This years layer of wood chips matted and created a hard crust. Why did it do this and how to fix?

your videos are always the easiest to understand when it comes to wood chips. We just laid about 3500 sqft of wood chips down minus a few raised beds and I am so excited to for this next years garden. Do you ever plant cover crop during the winter or add any coverings? I would like to plant some cool crops (north texas zone 8a/7b) and figured I could test some things out and see what happens. thanks for sharing!

Do you put the chips 8" deep right up against the trunk of the trees?
James would love your advice. Just got my first allotment. Making raised beds. Layering Fresh wood Chipping mulch on the bottom. Leaving for 2 month. Then adding a layer of manure, layer of top soil and finally a layer of compost before planting in spring if next year. Comments please. Love your programmes.
How do you know when your chips are ready?
Hey James, I found your channel about a year ago and I've learned a bunch – thanks for all your great videos. I'm now trying to get my parents to start a big garden back at home in North Jersey. I just had one question for you. We've got an area in our front yard that we used to mulch. The wood chips now are pretty much broken down – as it's been 2 years since they put a layer on top. The soil below is now 6+ inches deep. We're going to try planting in that area this year to test the method, but we also might move some of the soil to the back yard. Are there any issues (i.e. nitrogen tie up) that can arise from moving broken down wood chips from one area to another? This way we figure we don't have to wait as long for the soil to develop. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
