Tomatoes splitting as they ripen can be very demoralising. Even though they are still edible it isn’t what you want to happen. I made this video to show you how to best water your tomatoes to prevent this from happening in the future. Thanks to Gardena for sponsoring: https://www.gardena.com/uk/products/watering/

Great tips on preventing your tomatoes splitting Huw
Great video. Thanks
I always love your videos, I live in the United States, NC, it is hot, splitting is a common problem, I try to water every 2 days like you mentioned, I did not know what caused the problem on the bottom of the tomatoes, I thought it was insects, thanks
We've had a few very rainy years, this one even more so, with VERY hot and humid temps, so every single tomato has split. There's just no way to control that much water, even with deep mulch in place.
Use automatic watering systems even in a greenhouse, like I use a drip system/mist.. Drip for plants like the tomato, mist for things like the chives & mint.
Sexy
Cool thanks for the info
As usual, very useful. I hope you're not waiting until next season to make other videos. I'm glad that you've found sponsorship from Gardena. Drip systems are the way to go. I'm looking forward to those videos.
I hope the folks benefiting from your videos are also becoming sponsors on Patreon.
Good video, looking forward to the drip irrigation video, spring here in New Zealand so tomato seedlings up and more seed going in
Enjoyed your video and really looking forward to seeing your drip irrigation series. Cheers
Thanks mate
Great video ! Always so informational can't wait for the next 🙂 ~Grace
This is a great video. I am growing tomatoes and starting to fruit. Thanks for the tips 🙂
Any advice on how to set up a drip irrigation system on my allotment where there's no electricity and no ability to use hosepipes from our water supply?
Lovely video Huw. Just out of curiosity, do you use something like a cue card for your scripts or do you just ‘add hock’?
You have such a natural way in front of the camera, and your videos are so fresh and informative. Love them!
Tomaaaaaaaaaaaato. 🙂 Not Tomoto. Thanks for the vid. I have to try out that hose end sprayer!
Brilliantly clear information, takes the time to explain every detail calmly but with enthusiasm. You've inspired me with confidence. I have subscribed and look forward to more great videos. Thank you.
Drip irrigation is wonderful! Its even better when you realize there are timers available. From simple mechanical timers you twist to start and then leave, all the way to digital timers that have lots of scheduling features.
Happy gardening!
I don't water my toms i have a gutter with water in, fed from a rain butt outside the greenhouse and my buckets with Tom's in have a wick hanging out the bottom into the water, yes it's a wicking system but it works, so the only time I water them is when I feed them (straight into the buckets), it's worked for the last ten + years.
does tomatoes split when they get to much rain . does it just happen when the fruit start to form or is is it earlier than that.
Really helpful video thank you so much ❤️
I am growing indeterminate Better Boy tomatoes in large containers on my deck. On a daily SCHEDULED basis, I am trying to keep my soil CONSISTENTLY MOIST by watering twice a day, early morning (1 gallon) and late afternoon (1 gallon). I am watering in 2 gallons a day, because these are 7 foot tall, single stem plants with many green and orange tomatoes on them. During July, every day has been 90 degrees or hotter here in Richmond, Virginia. I have been applying 10-10-10 Miracle Grow "Liquafeed" every 10 days to the plants and spraying calcium on the leaves and fruit 2 days a week. That said, I am still seeing cracking on the tomatoes, especially around the flower pattern area at the top of the fruit. From the flower pattern area, cracking starts and goes down the side of the tomato and gets progressively worse. Any suggestions?
The scientific reason why the splitting takes place is what we are interested.in. Please give a scientific explanation on the mechanism why this splitting takes place within the fruit / skin
Which variety of tomato is best ?
I know this video is 2 years old, but I live in the Southern California desert. It's 100° every day plus. I have to water the garden twice a day, for about 10 min each. Do you think that's too much? I am getting splits and all sorts to deformities on my celebrity tomatoes. Any advice would greatly be appreciated?
I don't know why but if i don't water everyday my tomato's wilt. I know that most every gardener suggests every 2 – 3 days but I have several outstanding tomato plants producing and harvesting everyday. The soil is always dry a day after watering. So I water every morning for about 20 seconds. I'm wondering if maybe my soil could have good drainage?
Very informative video as always but why nobody talk about how handsome you look in there?
