VIDEO: How to Grow Dragon Fruit (Part 1) | Soil, Sun, Water, Containers, and Fertilizing

Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or pitayaha, is an incredible fruit produced by a cactus! Contrary to its name, the dragon fruit care is actually not like most cacti. It prefers nutrient-rich, well draining soil, a lot of space, and a decent (but not overwhelming) amount of sun.

I got some cuttings of the Hylocereus undatus variety, which is the red-skinned and white-fleshed variety. There are two other varieties:

– Hylocereus costaricensis: Red skin and red flesh
– Hylocereus megalanthus: Yellow skin and white flesh

Follow along as I learn how to grow dragon fruit in containers and compete against my friend to see who can grow the most EPIC dragonfruit. Just be patient…part 2 of this series might take a few months to come out!

  1. I bought some cuttings on market place a while ago. But the cuttings are skinny and small (6") and it grows but it thins out and breaks off. Is there anything I can do to make it grow?

  2. My brother got two of these as a gift many years ago and it's just been languishing there kinda neglected. I think I'm going to pick it up and see if I can't get something out of it 🙂

  3. Red dragon fruit is also good for aprill fools, eat one ,pee in the bathroom and when they see that they scream 'blood!' and you laugh saying thats not blood(joke)

  4. I've bought seeds, but will likely hold off planting until next year as I am propagating plants for my Dad's new property and being the test garden for his veggie plans (My veggie plans, his new property has far more space and much better soil) so running out of space (Who really needs a dining room table?) My soil is basically sand, so looks like I will have to cut this with another product to get a good loom. I am eager to see how your plants go.

  5. Does anyone know the name of the variety on the thumbnail of the video? Those buds are really close to an unknown variety in my garden I’m trying to identify

  6. Some things i learned about soil structure is it is similar to san pedro. So i am going to use a similar structure. Good organic soil, 30-40% perlite, and 5-10% sand and pumice.

  7. I live in CANADA..1 dragon fruit is $4.00
    Yellow dragon fruit tastes better
..for some reason my body doesn't
