VIDEO: Easy to Grow Bibb and Green Ice Hydroponic Lettuce Using the Kratky Method

In this video I am growing Bibb lettuce and Green Ice lettuce hydroponically, meaning in water instead of in soil. I use the Kratky method, which does not need an air pump. When you grow your own lettuce you always have a fresh supply of delicious greens and no worries about e-coli! If you need a tutorial on what the Kratky method is, please watch my Kratky Basics video :

  1. With the Fox Farms Grow Big Nutrient Solution, can you use just plain tap water right out of the faucet to start. Tap water is always treated with Chlorine or Chloramines. So does the water need to be pre-treated to remove these chemicals first?

  2. Love your videos. I’m just starting out gardening and I have learned so much from your videos. I had a question about starting seeds for hydroponics: My plan is to attempt to set up a schedule to grow lettuce by germinating new lettuce seeds (maybe 9 plants) once a week for about 5 weeks. I’m hoping that by doing this that I should have a constant source of lettuce for about 5 months. So starting 9 new plants per week for 5 weeks would require 45 rock wool cubes. Assuming my plan works and I continue to do this, it seems that I would be buying a lot of Rock wool. Is there a more affordable way to start seeds en mass like this without Rock wool? Is my plan a little crazy to start with? Thanks in advance!

  3. Very interesting. Have you run a cost analysis, to see how much each salad costs you in electricity, supplies, and using some amortization of the grow lights over maybe two or three years?

  4. Help!!! I’ve watched several of your videos about the Kratky method of growing lettuce. I’ve been trying all summer to grow lettuce this way but have had no success. My lettuce starts ok but when I transfer it to the jars, it starts to grow a little but then get very leggy and either stays that way or dies. I am using the Fox Farms solution you recommended. The PH of our tap water is high so I’ve added some white vinegar to get it down to about 6. I bought some lightbulbs and the silver cone sockets you
recommended. I can’t figure it out and I’m hoping to have this mastered by the time winter rolls around.

  5. I am sold on trying your method … we tried using an AeroGarden knock off unit without luck and also a converted VersaGrow unit using AeroGarden pods … also full fail. Can't wait to try this way. Thanks for such a detailed set of videos!

  6. Hi Tikki!! Just wanted to pass along that I was inspired by how easy you made it do the kratky method with your videos!! I was going to send you a picture, but I guess I can't in these comments. Anyways, I'm a pro a lettuce and am trying tomatoes and peppers and herbs now!!

  7. A great example of the Kratky method! I'm currently trying to start romaine cos lettuce indoors ,but so far on seedlings have sprouted. Does it depend on the type of lettuce seed? Buttercrunch starts beautifully, but I'm having a challenge with romaine. Any suggestions will help. Keep on growing, Tikki!!

  8. Great job on the video. My son started growing some bib lettuce for a school science experiment and your video is very helpful. It gives us a good idea of what our plants should look like as they grow. Again, very well done and informative video!

  9. Will this method work with lettuce, kale and chard in a non heated greenhouse? The temperature is about 45 degrees Fahrenheit when covered in snow in zone 7
