  1. Good Video. That's cool about the plants defense. Wish my roses had that. I have insect netting fabric now for the rose Midge fly.
I am going to try to plant 3 rose de Berne tomatoes out here in Adirondacks May 19th. I have already planted 3 under cloches. I am curious to see which ones do better.

  2. Thanks for that. If, like a bad wedding DJ, you take requests I would be interested in seeing a little experiment run if you have the time. Namely, a video with a time series of the magnified pix after some of the common organic foliar sprays and if they interfere/coat the natural defenses to the point of reducing their effectiveness and how now it takes to recover. So if I am battle thrips and spray Neem oil, soap, etc., a. does it disable the tomatoes natural defense, and b. how long before the tomato is back functioning as with its own bio counter measures again.

  3. That's interesting, I have noticed bugs do not land or hang around on tomato plants except for the tomato horn worm that we had down south. Imagine there are other species who will attack the plant but haven't noticed any to date, so the trichome does a great job of keeping predators away.
Thank you for the knowledge, it's fascinating and answering questions I never took the time to think of, glad I found your channel:)

  4. Crazy question.

What if you take a soft paintbrush and brush the tomato leaves and with the same paintbrush, brush it on another plant that does not create the defense against pests, would it damage the other plant?

So in essence, like using the pollinating brush for squash flowers, the male pollen on the female flower. Would it work with the tomato Trichomes on another plant leaf to protect itself from pests? Just wondering.

  5. AS memory of freshman botany serves (50 years ago…) A stoma is an opening. e.g. The mouth is a stoma in humans. The "muscles are the elongated pair of cells (i.e. "lips"at the stoma. ) They are called 'guard cells' and are inflated/deflated by water. Oh yeah, stoma also emit water vapor supposedly to cool the plant. Also, a guard cell is the only location where transpiration takes place in photosynthesis. At least that was the theory (stated as 'proven scientific fact') back in the day.

  6. Thanks for the knowledge. Now I know what the smell you love and I can't stand actually is. I inherited a very sensitive sense of smell and taste. To me tomato plants have an irritatingly musty odor. I plant tomatoes for the table and my wife tends them.
