That’s a snapping turtle according to Rena, she is an animal lover and processor for animal importing in New York thru usda. We are visiting her on our trip from California. You are going to have 20 or more baby snapping turtles within three months. They are born crabby so be careful if you pick a baby up. But I don't think they could take your finger off like the mama could.

My mother used to work a greenhouse and she would find turtle eggs in the bark mulch piles. Snapper eggs need a certain temp to hatch correctly.

That's really cool that you got to watch (and film for us) her lay the eggs.
I found an egg in my compost pile several weeks ago when I was turning the pile. I covered it back up and waited to see what would happen. I went back there the other day and there was just some eggshell pieces on top of the pile. I don't know if it hatched or something had it for a snack. I wish I knew what had put the egg there.
Mark you have such a boyish curiosity. Love it. Yes nature is awesome. I wish my kids could have gotten to see all of my "tomboy" wonders!
