In this video, I show you how I stopped our vegetable seeds (such as squash) from getting eaten by rats, mice, and other rodents in the garden.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂
Thanks Mark. Had this problem this morning with a bed of corn seed that I planted last night. Now I know what the likely culprit was! What are your thoughts please on direct sown corn seed versus transplant seedlings?
This would be a great use of empty plastic milk bottles with one end cut off. And they are free.
Very clever solution!
Does keeping cats around work? I had no idea my area had rodents until one of my cats bought me a present…
NYC rats are a problem. Can you hang planters on a stone wall to keep rats away? Does that work?
They must have great smell
Looks like a demoRAT TO me.
to stop any sort of rodent please allow your dogs to only chase them away (dont let them kill because rodents carry disease) soon enough you wont get any sort of problem. usually a dogs piss is enough to keep most prey animal away.
I live in the high desert in NM, USA. My worst issue is the birds that look at any seedlings as a salad.
This video gives me FNAF vibes
Is that simple method truly THAT effective? Thanks for making this video
That's a field mouse
Field mice do not like peas or brans
I'm pretty sure that he's a native type because of the hopping.
I think it is a vole
A cheaper idea might be to just lay a piece of metal screen over the top of the planter and then remove it once the seedlings get tall enough. $1/4 plastic domes could get expensive with the size of your property. Maybe a plastic owl or 2 would also help. Best of luck!
Where or what's the name of the music in your videos?
The piano intro music??
Get a king snake
Nice chap, informative video, claps and laughs for the jokes.
By the way, for those who wonder where the solution starts, please see 4:59.
Thanks.
Mark something is digging under my garlic. It’s too big to put a plastic tub over. Any ideas?
Those tall plants probably gave him access.
Great video! Hopefully I can make this work, I have a jerk mouse that is ravaging my garden. This morning I lost 3 baby cucumber plants and a squash plant, half a bean plant, a bunch of strawberries and strawberry leaves and a whole nice watermelon vine. He also took bites out of a few tomatoes, and hot peppers this week, and a few more baby cucumber plants. I'm at my wit's end!
BTW, 20 years later Halo CE is still my favourite (modern) video game 😀
Last year I grew 2 blocks of corn ( early & late ) First crop was great . Second crop had rats eat EVERY ear of corn . Don't mind sharing a little , but 30 cobs was a little much.
Do you think this method would work on sunflower seeds? I often have problems with critters stealing all my seeds before they can grow!
I have a cheeky possum. I caged off my veggies and they still took 3 zucchini seedlings from the edge.
