In this video, I team up with Kevin from Epic Gardening and we showcase 6 Birdies raised garden beds as examples of what vegetables, herbs, and fruit can be grown in these types of containers practically anywhere!

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. We love your gardening program. Also, in looking at the products available in the US on Epic Gardening, I've noticed that they're not as tall as what you have in your yard, ie some at approximately 3 foot. The higher raised beds would be so appreciated if you and Epic can talk to Birdies again. Thank you.

  2. Thanks for another video on raised bed gardening. I think I have watched them all recently and seen Mark evolve "through the ages". I filled one 80x80x80 bed about two weeks ago, and I wondered if anyone had had problems with smells following the "Hügelkultur" method? I did logs, dried grasses/plants/leaves, pine bark, compost, and potting soil. So nothing too "green" that would turn it into a compost heap, as such. I wondered f this smell will go away – before my neighbours start moaning, I just have a small terrace garden with other people in flats nearby – or if it is something I will live with? I am wondering if I vented the bed somehow e.g. with a pipe down the side whether this would make things better, or worse? The potatoes are already growing great, so I wouldn't want to dig it out and start again, but I would love to get rid of the smell. So far I cannot see this issue being really discussed.

  3. I think im gonna get my mom one of these beds for Mothers Day next year. Since the construction is easy my dad wont gripe too much when putting it together for her hahaha

  4. Love seeing my two gardening "dads" in one video! Well done guys 🙂 You are both too young to be my dad but the gardening knowledge you spit, POPS! So much fun and lots of good info. I am planning on buying a birdies for my small Sydney backyard. Thanks.
