Our Church still gives treat bags and everyone looks forward to it. We still get about the same thing that I have gotten during my 78 years. 1 orange, 1 apple, 1 tangerine a candy bar pkg of gum a few nuts [variety] I forgot what they are called but it's chocolate with white inside, shape like a MT, my sweetheart always loved them. We never had a banana but did sometimes have a candy cane or wrapped peppermint rounds. We give them out after our Church play.
Yonkers, OK (NE Okla) late 1950's at the Four Corners Church. Christmas Eve services and yes, everyone took home a "Poke." Thank you for the journey back in time. Literally, I have not heard a person say the term "Poke" in sixty years. Thank you.
I got a poke bag every year at my daddys church. It had all those things and also Juicy fruit and Wrigley's spearmint gum. ❤
I remember getting those as a kid. I havent seen any in yrs but also my kid is grown.
I love this tradition. We always called them Christmas Pokes.
Poke, sack and bag were the same name when I grew up. Always Brazil nuts and other nuts plus apple and orange with peppermint canes on the tree
We always got these at church when i was a kid!!! Brings back memory’s. I did make them for my Sunday School kids this year tho.
These items were put in our stockings every Christmas growing up.
What a great Tradition, I have never heard of the poke bags growing up. Or if I did I dont remember them. But how could you forget that
our church always gives a clear bag of christmas hard candy, gum drops, chocolate covered peanuts, orange slices, coconut haystacks, all loose in a clear plastic bag tied with a bread tie. love it.
I sure do miss our poke bags at Christmas
Thank you so much for sharing about the “poke bag”. Lol on the tangerine vote!
We always got an apple, an orange, some nuts and the old fashion ribbon hard candy. I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my mother cracking walnuts for my father. He loved eating the nuts with the ribbon candy.
We always got our bags after church on the Sunday before Christmas or Christmas day if Christmas was on Sunday. Apple, orange, big candy bar and a pack of gum. Great memories. I grew up on Crooked Creek in Peach Creek West Virginia in the heart of Appalachia.
I didn't grow up in Appalachia but, my dad told my sisters and I about a poke or pokes. He would put the same type of treats in our stockings. Nice to see this tradition still happens.
Love seeing your grandmother on your videos. I sure do miss my grandmother, love on her as much as you can while she’s here. ❤️
My grandma did these for us growing up , she was from bland co Virginia, we got nuts, peppermint stick or candy canes , orange and apple , a chocolate bar and socks . They didnt have much to give , but that bag was filled with a grandmother's love . So simple but , I still miss them ,
This world needs more people like y'all .Love your giving hearts .
We always got these items in our stockings 🙂 love the memories
Live in SW Virginia and enjoyed the same tradition growing up. Oh! the memories. Thanks for sharing. Love the Blue Ridge mountain traditions.
I had to come find this video because you talked about poke bags in your current video.
Love your nanna! What a sweet lady!
I've never heard of these. How wonderful they must have been to get one when they started. Love this idea
So glad your comments are not off on this video.. i have no clue why someone would have verbal diarreha toward you .. I adore you and wish you were in my home today to take over for the outbreak of conversation with my daughter,, sorry i lost my cool , which is fine but just not so wise as it should be or could be.
Never too late to start a new tradition. My children and grandkids prefer us giving them a card with money or a gift card. I don’t mind that because it saves me from shopping and wrapping. However this year I am going to make poke bags along with their cards. Love this idea.
