The colder it gets they will all try to get in there to stay warm. Then you will have a lot of poop in there. We use a plastic dish up on a board that's helps.

Most channels I watch that have chickens give them warm water and use the rubber bowls. One channel has a small float heating device but the trough is large. I know you are excited to get chicks in the spring and it will be fun to watch them grow. Stay warm.

We use a heated dog bowl and never have to worry about frozen water for our chickens. We use the K&H Pet Products 1.5gal bowl. It's low wattage and works great for chickens. Maybe we'll show it in an upcoming video.
