VIDEO: CFL vs LED vs HID – Choose The Best Grow Light In 2020!

Indoor Grow Lights, So Many Choices, So Confusing. In this video, I take you on a beginner tutorial of the 3 main choices for indoor grow lights and which one is best for you.

High Intensity Diodes (HID) such as High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and Metal Halide (MH) are out of the realm of most home growers, often requiring
special ballasts and external cooling solutions.

LED bulbs were not viable until only recently, being either too weak to provide adequate lumens, or only providing an extreme side of the spectrum. Now, they are very much a viable solution, often preferred. Their only drawback being the high initial buy in cost.

CFL bulbs are not quite as efficient as LED bulbs, but the barrier of entry is so low, that even in the long run, you can still come out ahead! Aim for 6500K light intensity (“Daylight” bulbs in retail) and your seedlings, clones, small plants, and microgreens will grow like crazy!

  1. So normal led light bulbs wont work? I literally just put some seedlings under five 6500k bulbs with one 2700k bulb..

Yikes hopefully they grow fine, will treat it as more of an experiment now i guess.

  2. JUST SO FOLKS AREN'T OUT HERE KILLING THEIR PLANTS WITH TOO MUCH HEAT In theory LED lights could convert all of the electricity into light, but thats just sci-fi mumbo jumbo. In REALITY LEDs convert 20% or more of the electricity into heat.

  3. I have a mixture of different systems for my grow closet. I have one of those 7 way E27 splitters with 7 CFLs hanging from the top and 10 cheap LED strip lights on the walls to get some light to the lower leaves. The CFLs get a little hot, so I put a little USB laptop cooling fan right above it and that worked to dissipate the heat.

  4. Hi, thanks a lot for the the video man, it really helped me

But I have a question please help me out!
Can I use normal household LED bulbs for growing some Cannabis indoor?
I am gonna use about 6 of them (9watts/bulb)

  5. I Cut the plastic Bulb off Eq. 100W L.E.D. Bulbs … Then take some red and blue food coloring and basically dye the silicon diodes.. Some of each Bulb… Had NO Problem getting My Plants To Flower, Just Using CHEAP Dollar Store Bulbs.. Mostly… And Used 3 Bulbs Per Tall About 3-3.5 ft. tall WHITE Garbage (Plastic) Bins You can Get For A Couple Bucks… Last Winter I Was Able To Grow Enough & Start Some Amazing Plants Indoors Prior To My Region Being Able To Plant Outdoors.. I Tried It A Few Years Back After Learning Lumen Requirements & Saw They Were Pretty Close… It Worked & Been Using Them Ever Since.

  6. Sadly, 3 foot eaves around my house and lots of trees mean I have practically no natural light, maybe an hour or two of morning sun in one window on one side of the house. It’s so depressing. This year I’ve decided to get some artificial lighting, and you are right, it’s very confusing. I just need it for tropical plants, I’m not raising seedlings or anything. I had a regular bulb in the recessed fixture over my kitchen sink…the plants I have there seemed ok, not a lot of new growth but enough to keep the alive. I just replaced that bulb with an LED daylight (not marketed as a plant bulb) and I am hoping it will be an improvement….in the meantime, trying to decide on what else I’m going to get for the winter.
