Just bought 48 Acres undeveloped close to Etowah Tennessee starting my adventure
Thanks for these great learning lessons as we get ready to start our farmstead.
Rain is a blessing, they can't burn us down!
You have a great voice lady!! Love your videos!
You have a beautiful farm, Patara! And this episode has several good tips. Thank you for sharing your learning adventures!
I did the same thing on my first farm in Kentucky. My older farmer neighbor came over for some fence talk as I was looking at my flooded barn and said "I knew you shouldn't have built it there"….I said "WELL, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?", to which he replied…."Ya didn't ask"…..:) true story.
I've got to get one of those hats. I just love it. Do you sell those?
I'm not too far from you and it's a mud pit at my house. I'm definitely sympathetic to your ordeal.
I wish I had learned more about my property before building a barn. Just behind my barn looks like a swamp. I hate seeing my livestock walking through knee deep mud and water.
You are 100% correct about the gates. My exwife had a privacy fence installed with a 10 ft gate to drive a truck threw if needed. Its barley big enough and a pain in the butt to get through. So I just bought a new property and all my gates are 12ft at least. Love your videos congratulations on the new farm. God bless you and your family.
Very good thoughts. Another consideration is especially if you put up a 3 sided shed is to be familiar with what direction you weather usually comes from. Or if there are natural hills that would protect. I wouldn’t want the open side to be facing our southwest as that’s where most of our snow or rain would blow in.
Good tips! Also, about orienting buildings, don’t put barn above well. Bacteria in manure will go downhill when it rains.
Thank you Patara for sharing. I am a new subscriber and love what you are doing. Couldn't agree more. We do learn from our mistakes. One thing we did do right is when we rebuilt some stalls in our barn, we made the wall that divide two stalls removable! This way, we have the flexibility of how choosing big of a stall we need. Thought this might be helpful as you build your new farm.
Thanks so much for the great advice! We just bought 28 acres in West Tennessee. It has been so wet this year (2020), we can't even walk the entire property due to the awful sucky, sticky mud. No flooding so far but the land is like a sponge and is unbelievably saturated with water. You put the silver lining on our storm clouds. Thanks to you, I know now is the perfect time for us to pick out build sites for our barn and paddocks.
I was in your part of the world when this was filmed. I have never seen such heavy rain. Truly apocalyptic.
That calf is so cute. Love hearing the train in the background.
This is such valuable information for us as we search for our new homestead. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge!
I am old now and have learned 3 important things. You CAN learn life lessons through OBEDIENCE. You MAY learn life lessons through EXPERIENCE, but you WILL learn life lessons through SUFFERING. I am learning a lot through your life experiences here in South Louisiana.
A new farm! How exciting! I'll be watching to see how you make this your new home. Congratulations!
Love the calf! Homesteading is always a work in progress. Love your home.
love your video blessings
Good advice!
I see you with the fresh baked bread and steak on the skillet. They don't make many women that put real meals together like that anymore
Have you ever had to pull a calf because it was backwards? One of the scariest things I think, but the payoff is the best part.
