Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. As an Aussie Girl, you are a classic fella!

Looking forward to watching more of your content, loving the heat hardy plants, always great when you mention that they are good with the heat like the spinach!

Thank you for what you do and you are so much fun to watch!

  2. I have a dragon fruit plant but i cant get it to pollinate. Its had a bunch of flowers but no matter what i did it wouldnt take. Those red ones look delicious

  3. Good God I hate Ku-gua..Bitter melon. There is one use I found for it. You let it completely dry out on the vine(don't even think of harvesting it) and when it is like paper to the touch you get a really good luffa.

  4. Thank you for your videos, every single one is amazing. I live around the region of the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and originally from El Salvador where we have all types of tropical fruits like Australia. One of the fruits in El Salvador that I like the most is the Annona (pink and white).

  5. Iโ€™ve watched hundreds of hours of YouTube videos on gardening and Mark is by far the most informative, practical, and entertaining. Thanks much to him, Iโ€™m growing dragonfruit and fingerlimes in Oklahoma. My first dragonfruit is maturing and Iโ€™m pretty sure itโ€™s the same American Beauty variety heโ€™s growing.

  6. I tried the light purple eggplants…their seeds were a little over powering for eggplant parm. I also was not a fan of the texture. So I an understand why they wouldn't sell very well

  7. Lilly pilly. Absolutely delicious in salads and just straight off the tree/bush (Iโ€™m in a temperate zone in Perth and keep the tree pruned to an easily manageable hedge.

  8. I found a mandarin finger lime growing under a huge bush in our yard when we moved into our home with its overgrown garden and once we freed it, it exploded! I put them in every drink possible and ate them in salads or just plain with a bit of salt. Fingerlimes are awesome!!!

  9. I love your videos as well as your vibe, your attention to your plants is really inspiring. Alot of the plants you have i cant grow here in northern michigan usa, but none the less educational on how i should treat my plants as well as new ones i can grow! Thank you for your videos!

  10. SIR THAT WHAT YOU CALL BITTER GOURD CUT IT IN HALF CLEAN THE SEEDS OUT LET IT BOIL IN SALTED WATER
5/6 MIN FROM THE TIME IT BOILS MAKE SOM MINCED MEAT THE WAY YOU LIKE IT FILL THEM UP PUT THAT IN THE OVEN UNTIL GOURD GET SOFT AND INPREGNATED WITH THE MEAT (USE OINION AND GARLIC TRUE THE MEAT ) ENJOY

  11. Hi Mark,
I watch your videos, some of them a few times.
Could you help me out,- Iโ€™m setting a veggie garden now, really want to get asparagus going but canโ€™t find crowns anywhere. Is it so out of season? Would you know who might have them for sale?
    Thank you,
    Elena

  12. Grow the Jerusalem Artichoke in a container. It is a full time job trying to contain it. The flatulence seems to go away once you get used to it. Don't eat too many the first time. It has inulin.
